Powell Duffryn is an industrial group principally engaged in Ports and Shipping Services, and Engineering. The group's divisions include Ports and Shipping Services, Engineering, Fuel Distribution, and Other Businesses. Engineering consists of Marine Equipment; Industrial Compressors; Combustion Engineering; and Waste Disposal Equipment. Hamworthy Marine is a leading designer and manufacturer of ships' equipment including rudders, waste treatment plant, cargo pumps for handling bulk loads of LPG and other chemicals, and engine room pumps and compressors. Hamworthy Marine Ltd includes Hamworthy Pumps & Compressors Ltd, Hamworthy Marine Technology Ltd and Svanehcj Internatiortal A/S. Hamworthy Pumps & Compressors Ltd based in Poole, Dorset, UK manufactures marine pumps and compressors. Despite incurring restructuring costs, the division increased its profit contribution during 1997. Machining capacity at Poole has been cut and, according to the company, this will allow for greater use to be made of subcontract manufacture, sourced from the UK and lower cost countries as appropriate. Hamworthy Marine Technology Ltd, also based in Poole, Dorset, produces rudders and waste management systems for ships. Svanehcj lntemati~onal MS, based in Aalborg, Denmark, manufactures marine cargo pumping systems and district heating pumps. 1997 revenues were up by more than one third with sales benefitting from a buoyant market for LPG tankers and an increase in orders from Japanese owners. In addition, there was improvement in service activity. •
