FOCUS part of Arkema’s €1 acquisition bn programme for 2011-2015. The businesses covered by the deal are complementary to Arkema’s existing operations and will consolidate the group’s acrylics and emulsions divisions. In addition it will make Arkema the world’s third largest coatings resins producer after BASF and Dow Chemicals, as well as making it the photopolymerizable resins market leader in the US and the second largest producer in Europe. Furthermore, it will give Arkema opportunities for growth in Asia as Cray Valley has installations in India and Malaysia, and Sartomer recently opened a factory near Canton, China. The acquisition will assist Arkema in achieving its objective of making 23% of its turnover in the emerging nations. With a turnover of €850 M and 1750 employees at 20 sites in 13 countries, the new set of businesses will complement Arkema’s existing position in emulsions, rheological additives, polymers and fluorinated copolymers. The project has yet to be approved by the competition authorities but could be finalized during 1H 2011. The deal should make a positive contribution to Arkema’s net profits in its first year and add €900 M to turnover in 2015 (+20%), allowing the group to achieve a 14% margin. For its part Total has confirmed plans to streamline around speciality chemicals. Chimie Pharma Hebdo, 13 Dec 2010, (532), 6 (in French)

chrome plating Soliant Fluorex bright film is the longest and thinnest chrome film thermoformed thermoplastic polyolefins (TPO) part fabricated. The part has a lustrous chrome surface but offers the additional benefits of being lighter, more environmentally friendly and less costly than traditional chrome plated bumper. Eco friendly Soliant Fluorex bright film can be extruded, laminated, thermoformed and injection molded making it an ideal finishing material for parts formed from cost effective TPO. It offers excellent impact and chemical resistance, superior gravelometer performance and is fully recyclable. The same part won the heavy gauge vacuum forming category at the parts competition organized by the SPE’s Thermoforming Division which took place on 19 Sep 2010 in Milwaukee. In this case the award went to the molder of the part Brentwood Industries. The chrome film bumpers which are attached to the Ford Mustang, Chevy Camaro and Dodge Charger with two sided 3M tape utilize Soliant Fluorex bright film to achieve a customized chrome look without the fuss and expense of dip chroming. The chrome film is laminated to a 0.060 in thick TPO substrate using a molding process that maximizes chrome aesthetic consistency. AkzoNobel Speciality Plastics has patented and pioneered many of today’s most exciting advances in coatings technology including reflective printing films, soft feeling coatings, UV and special effects and continues advancement with new technologies. PPG begins operation of Tianjin aerospace application support centre On 4 Nov 2010, PPG Industries commenced first-phase operation

C O AT I N G S of its new aerospace application support centre (ASC) at Tianjin, China. The $2.1 M investment by the company at Tianjin will be completed in two phases with the aim of expanding the range of high-performance products and applications for use in the Chinese aerospace sector. Together with a facility at Suzhou in eastern China, the new ASC will help PPG to meet increasing demand for aerospace products in the country. Completion of the second-phase investment at Tianjin will provide the company with production capacity for 200 tonne/y of aerospace coatings and 100 tonne/y of sealants. In addition to selling 100 aircraft transparencies annually, PPG also plans to provide chemical management services and valueadded packaging. Located in the free trade zone of the Tianjin Aerospace Industrial Park, the new ASC will form an essential part of the aviation supply chain to facilities operated by the likes of Airbus and Boeing. PPG strengthens packaging coatings positions with acquisition During 4Q 2010, PPG Industries aims to complete the purchase of Bairun, a privately-owned producer of packaging coatings based at Foshan in Guangdong province, southern China. The acquisition is expected to involve the transfer of around 70 Bairun staff currently employed in sales, R&D, quality control, technical support, production, and storage operations. Bairun has a solid position in the monobloc aerosol and tube (MAT) and lug cap, crown and general (LCG) segments of the packaging coatings market, complementing that held by PPG in the food and beverage cans segments. Carbon nanotubes spin a yarn A team at the Nanotech Insititute at the University of Texas in Dallas. TX has produced the first electrically conducting yarns made from carbon nanotube sheets, various powders and nanofibres. The biscrolling technique produces very strong yarns, which can be woven, sewn, knitted and braided. They could find applications for energy storage and harvesting, structural composites, photocatalysis and intelligent textiles. Host CNT sheets are overlaid with guest powders using an electrostatic powder-coating gun. The guesthost stack is twist spun to form a biscrolled yarn. The technique is adapted from traditional textilespinning techniques. It involves drawing 10 nm diameter multiwalled carbon nanotubes from a forest of similar length tubes deposited on a substrate while applying a twist at the same time. The researchers also made biscrolled yarns containing up to 98 wt% graphene oxide nanoribbons that were then converted to graphene nanoribbon yarn by reducing the graphene oxide. These yarns could be used to make weavable anodes for flexible lithium-ion batteries, says Baughman. The researchers showed that they could make electrodes for lithiumion batteries using LiFePO4 as the guest powder. Baughman and co-workers also fabricated highly catalytic fuel cell cathodes by biscrolling nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube guests. These devices are promising for future applications because they do not contain any of the expensive platinum found in conventional fuel cells.
