Non-contact extensometer provides accurate strain measurement

Improved processing of fibre reinforced thermoplastics using PC software SOFTWARE to allow moulders to set the process parameters required for matched metal tool stamping operations with sheet thermoplastic composites or glass mat thermoplastics (GMT), is to be developed at the Institut fur Kunststoffverarbeitung (IKV) in Aachen. Currently it is difficult to monitor the temperature distribution through the thickness of the part during moulding. This means that the temperature-time intervals and pressures involved in the process can only be determined empirically. The data is becoming available that would allow a theoretical analysis of

each operation based on thermal conductivity, heat capacity etc, but these operations are too complex to be undertaken on a one off basis by the moulder. The logical process is for the necessary parameters and theoretical considerations to be incorporated in a dedicated piece of software where input can be made to accommodate the specific component being produced. This is the basis for IKYV’s COSITEC software package, which will be developed in collaboration with software company M-Base, also located in Aachen. The idea is for the software to be perso-

nal computer (PC) based and to require no additional investment in hardware by the operating companies. Participants in the programme are being sought who will be entitled to have a material of their choice studied at the IKV as an illustrative example as the software is developed. Intensive training for participants will also be provided and companies will be given early versions of COSITEC as it emerges in order to allow use as soon as possible.

Precision roller system lowers emission levels A PRESSURE roller system that delivers a uniform saturation of fibreglass materials in medium or larger sized parts at low emission levels is now available from Poly-Craft. The UNI-ROLL pressure roller system can roll out accurately metered and mixed catalyst resin. It is part of a complete system which uses proven and patented preciPoly-Craft’s control. sion metering

disconnected to allow the discharge of waste material from mixing the chamber, hose and roller assembly. The unit is lightweight and features a portable cart or boom assembly. It can adapt to suit most metering systems, says Poly-Craft.

ANENHANCED resolution video extensometer, designed principally for use in measuring strain and extension in composite materials for example, where strength and high modulus are important parameters can now be obtained from Instron Ltd. lnstron says the extensometer is particularly suitable for measuring strain extremely accurately over short extension ranges, or in materials which show low extension to failure. The system is non-contacting, so the risk of extensometer damage, generally caused by materials which release a high amount of energy at failure, is effectively eliminated. The instrument’s capacity for operating in selected fields of view means it can cope with a wide range of gauge lengths and may therefore be used on a diversity of product type. Instron is also upgrading the electronic control unit on its Schenck servohydraulic materials testing machine installed in Lloyd’s Register’s Materials Laboratory to its 8500 digital System. Instron says advantages already evident include better control of the test instrument, with no feedback problems Instron’s advanced 8500 system will provide full digital control for the machine. This allows integration of test operations and test methods. /an Lavirzge, Instron
