PREFACE In the last decade the interest in optical and material properties of hot plasmas has increased substantially. This was brought about by the appearance of high powered lasers and electron guns which make it possible to produce conditions in matter for a short time that are reminiscent to conditions in stellar interiors. The increased interest of both theorists and experimentalists is reflected by the growing number of conferences on the subject, like the bi-yearly meetings on "Atomic Processes in High Temperature Plasmas" and "International Conferences on Spectral Line Shapes". In addition to the general topical conferences, smaller workshops have also been organized on the subject at the Centre European de Calcul Atomique et Moleculaire (CECAM) in Orsay in 1975 and 1976. The conference titled "Radiative Properties of Hot Dense Matter" held at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, 17-20 November 1980, was a direct outgrowth of the previous workshops in Orsay with the aim to exchange working experiences as well as new progress reports among principal investigators. Considering the small size of the conference (approximately 70 participants) the topics covered can be regarded as only supplements to the much larger field of research in general. Nevertheless, the members of the organizing committee felt that to share the proceedings with the scientific community would serve a useful purpose. The members of the organizing committee are indebted to the Naval Postgraduate School for hosting the conference. Thanks are due to Dr. Bruce Tarter of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory for his valuable assistance and also to Nancy Willard, Barbara Pereira, Detlev Tiszauer, and Rosemary Walling for their help in the actual details of running the conference.
