I hope that 1992 will be seen as a year when the Society strengthens and expands its influence in Europe and other parts of the world. 1992 sees the Free Trade agreement within the European Community and it is appropriate that our Society should play its role in the wider context of Europe. During 1991, a working party under the chairmanship of Professor David Jennings reviewed the role of the Society in Europe. They considered that support for mycology in Europe should be a high priority for the Society. This will be undertaken by developing the close links that already exist with mycological societies and individuals in Europe, organizing at least one meeting and/or foray in mainland Europe each year and, in particular, developing links with mycologists in East European countries. As part ot this initiative, the Society will be the chief sponsor of the 11th Congress of European Mycologists at Kew in September, 1992 with a number of forays and formal symposia. In October, the Society will be a joint organizer of a foray in Mallorca. As a mycologist who has collected fungi from many parts of the world, I am pleased that one of the meetings organized by the Society during my presidential year is on Tropical Mycology. Further proof, if it was necessary, that the British Mycological Society is a truly international society and interested and willing to promote mycology worldwide. With Dr A J Kuthubutheen, University of Malaya, as one of our vice presidents for 1992, I hope this will encourage mycologists in other parts of the world as to the vital role they play in our knowledge of fungi and in the promotion of the aims of the Society. The Society will continue its policy of providing a wide range of meetings, forays and workshops for the membership. 1992 will see the introduction of a new subscription policy with a view to strengthening our financial base. The Mycologist and Mycological Research continue to thrive and every effort is being made to reduce the publication time of papers in the latter. The objective must be to reduce the publication time to six months so that we do not lose authors to other journals. I take over a thriving and expanding Society and I hope that the Society proceeds to even greater successes in the future. , ~.
