The British Mycological Society embraces both professional and amateur mycologists in its membership providing a sound base for the Society to continue its evolution and development. In the past 20 years Mycology has advanced greatly and this is reflected in the breadth of meetings and publications organised by the Society. This, together with the recognition given to advances in Fungal Biology, has been important in enhancing the international status of the Society. Current Government science policy has left many who work in Universities, Polytechnics and Research Institutes feeling concern for the future. The pressure to undertake research which has some immediate relevance is very strong and 'raises questions about the neglect of more basic studies. I am sure most of us are attempting to respond positively to this 'challenge'. One positive way forward is through collaborative research programmes bringing together different areas of expertise to the greater good. By ensuring a vigorous and thriving Society we can provide opportunities for our members to establish such vital links. As my year of office as President begins, I look forward to the interesting programme of meetings and forays that lie ahead and to the opportunity of seeing many of you at these gatherings. I look forward also to working with Council and its several committees and hope we can continue with the steady development of the Society, maintaining its rightful place in the scientific community both here and abroad.
