Preventive Approaches to Child Welfare

Within the last several years an emerging emphasis on prevention has combined with an interest in the ecological perspective on child development. The articles in this topic issue illustrate this shift away from a deficit approach to service delivery toward a preventive and broadly focused interventive stategy. The studies reported herein indicate the promise of this innovative orientation. With this issue we conclude our first year of publication. This has been an exciting year for all of us involved with the Journal. At this juncture I would like to extend a note of sincere appreciation us organize and

to the numerous individuals who have helped bring about CHILDREN AND YOUTH SERVICES REVIEW. At Cornell University the early thinking regarding the Journal received encouragement from Ray C. Rist,

Stanley L. Witkin, Robert McGinnis, Scott Long and Richard Campbell. Later at the University of Oregon, Richard J. Hill, former editor of SOCZOMETRY, provided timely and rather substantial advice that led toward a broader vision. The advice of Norm Sundberg and Ed Weeks was also timely and helpful. The REVIEW has found a welcome home base at The Lila Acheson Wallace School of Community Service and Public Affairs. 349
