Leadership in National Prevention Policy and Practice Fellowships The Association of Teachers of Preventive Medicine (ATPM), in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), support 1- to 2-year stipend-supported fellowship opportunities in a variety of public health and prevention interest areas. Topics include disability prevention, aging and health, perinatal epidemiology, STD prevention, immunizations, injury control, hazard evaluation, and maternal/child health. Graduate students and early career professionals are eligible to apply. Positions are located at the CDC Centers/Institutes/Offices throughout the United States. Call for Articles The On-Line Journal of Nursing Informatics (OJNI) is issuing a call for articles. OJNI is a newly created professional, electronic journal that will be published four times a year for health professionals interested in nursing informatics. Topics covered will deal with the theoretical and practical aspects of nursing informatics as it related to the four areas of nursing: administration, education, practice, and research. The Commission wii1 also provide advice to the President's National Science and Technology Council on biomedical and ethics issues related to science and new technologies. Patricia F. Brennan, PhD, RN, FAAN, has been appointed as the Bascom Moehlman Professor of Nursing and Professor of Industrial Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. TriService Nursing Research Program Report An Institute of Medicine Committee on the TriService Nursing Research Program, chaired by Ruth McCorkle, PhD, RN, FAAN, and Geraldene Felton, EdD, RN, FAAN, issued a report on ways to improve the research program. The report also provides recommendations for the future focus of research efforts, such as military nursing care during wartime and peace-keeping. National Women's Health Information Center Established
New AAN Primary Care Resource Available
The National Women's Health Information Center (NWHIC) is being established at a joint project of the U.S. Public Health Service, Office on Women's Health, and the U.S. Army Medical Research and Material Command to provide a national resource that links available women's health information from the federal and state government, private sector organizations, and the World Wide Web. A new program is the Canada-U.S.A. Women's Health Forum proposed joint initiatives on research, including clinical trials. In addition to sharing scientific information and encouraging collaborative investigations, there will be shared scientific meetings. Examples include the Consensus Development Conference on Screening Mamrnography for Younger Women to be held in January 1997 in Bethesda, Md., and research workshops on specific conditions, such as a workshop on urinary incontinence being developed for Iate spring 1997. Primary Care: America's Health in a New Era The recently released report from the Institute of Medicine, Primary Care: America's Health in a New Era, provides a new definition of primary care that includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other first-contact health care providers. The report addresses primary care provided in a variety of settings and to several different populations. It contains recommendations for core competencies and interdisciplinary training as well as recommendations for research and national databases.
