British Calibration

Service

Establishment of British Calibration Service The former Minister of Technology, Mr Frank Cousins, announced on 25 April in the debate on the Queen’s Speech that he proposed to establish a nationwide service to industry for the calibration of measuring equipment. This is to be known as The British Calibration Service, with headquarters in the Ministry of Technology, who will plan and regulate the service. The actual calibration of instruments will be carried out in existing laboratories, public and private, up and down the country. The headquarters will be responsible for inspecting and approving laboratories and for maintaining the essential link between their standards and the national standards. The National Physical Laboratory will remain responsible for the national standards. Approved laboratories will be authorised to issue calibration certificates and to charge their customers economic fees. Mr Cousins’ intention is that when the British Calibration Service is fully established it shall not, except for part of the cost of the headquarters’ staff, be a charge on public funds. The Director of the British Calibration Service will be Mr H E Barnett, TD, MSc, ACGI, DIC, MIEE, who was until recently Assistant Director of the Electrical Inspection Directorate of the Ministry of Aviation. Further details of this Service may be obtained from the Ministry of Technology, Millbank Tower, London, S W 1.

Australian

Vacuum

Society

Proposed Australian Vacuum Society The formation of an Australian Vacuum Society is being proposed. A circular has been sent out by R J Browne of the Australian company Dynavac High Vacuum Proprietary Limited. The purpose of this circular is to determine the extent of interest in an Australian Society whose aims will be to promote communication and dissemination of information amongst those interested in vacuum science and technology. It is proposed that this initially take the form of an organized gathering, with perhaps two or three functions a year. It may, at a later date, be advantageous to form a legally-constituted society of limited liability, perhaps affiliated with some kindred institute. It is probable that functions will be held separately in both Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and perhaps other states; this will however, depend on the number interested in each State. Suggestions are welcomed on all matters of format and procedure, particularly with regard to the form that functions should take. All communications should be addressed to: R J Browne c/o Dynavac High Vacuum Proprietary Limited P 0 Box 98 Burwood E 13 Victoria Australia
