FOCUS Protech acquires Flanders Powder The powder coatings business of Wevelgem, Belgium based Flanders Powder NV has been purchased by The Protech/ Oxyplast Group of Montreal, through its Belgian affiliate, Oxyplast Belgium NV. The agreement also provides the group a stake in Ekopowder of Opava, Czech Republic. Meanwhile, The Protech/Oxyplast Group has bought a new plant in Fairfield, NJ, USA, which is close to its present site in Parsippany, NJ, USA. The company will transfer production to the new plant by 2Q 2007. The move should boost production efficiency and raise capacity by more than 50%. European Paint and Resin News, Dec 2006, 44 (12), 5

Australia’s stagnating decorative paint sales hit Orica division in 2006 The financial performance of Orica, a publicly-traded consumer and mining firm, suffered as a result of Australia’s weakening decorative paint sales. Orica posted flat sales volume of decorative paints for most of 2006, though some gains were registered towards the end of 2006. Market share gains allowed the company to post marginally higher revenue from trade sales of paint. The introduction of new products in the interior and decking segments boosted woodcare sales. However, the trend of producers to relocate plants overseas caused powder coatings sales to drop by 12%. Paint sales increased 3% in 2006 to A$535.3 M, while the consumer product division’s earnings before interest and tax dropped by 3% to A$97.3 M. European Paint and Resin News, Dec 2006, 44 (12), 7

company Relius as part of the consolidation of the old Degussa construction chemicals businesses, which BASF purchased in Jul 2006. However, Relius’ wall systems will continue to be a segment of the construction chemicals unit. Relius operates architectural and industrial coatings factories in Oldenburg and Memmingen, Germany. The products are used for wet coatings, powder coatings, protective coatings and wind turbine coatings. It has about 110 employees. The dayto-day working of the Relius employees will not be affected by the organizational adjustments. BASF hopes to save about €100 M/y by 2010 from the organizational changes. The consolidation of Degussa’s construction chemicals business into BASF’s operations will eliminate around 200 jobs globally and will result in a onetime cost of roughly €75 M. NEW PRODUCTS On a roll: DuPont’s coatings addition to the Ti-Pure range DuPont Titanium Technologies has expanded its range of titanium dioxide products with TiPure R-902+, a multi-purpose grade pigment with improved dispersion and good particle size distribution. The new product is intended to provide coatings producers with superior hiding power, coating coverage, tint strength, whiteness, and performance consistency. Ti-Pure R-902+ offers easy dispersion in both aqueous and alkyd system, and imparts high chalk resistance, improved gloss and tint retention, and high resistance to overbake yellowing during cure. The new product is particularly suitable for industrial

Additives aid design in daunting applications Additives are increasingly playing vital roles in addressing the challenging design and performance requirements of innovative plastics products and technologies. Nanoparticles are particularly seeing increased utilization in cutting edge applications. These include Degussa’s additives based on nanoscaled metal oxide pigments, which facilitate laser welding or laser marking of its Plexiglas MPPA and Trogamid polyamide without compromising transparency. Nylon Corp of America Inc’s nanoSEAL is claimed as a costeffective barrier material for satisfying regulatory requirements on gas permeation in fuel systems. For powder coating of plastics, GE Plastics is providing a conductive filler package in Noryl GTX 674PC compound and modified polyphenylene ether to eliminate the need for electrostatic primers. This can offer several distinct benefits, such as metal substrate replacement, greater design freedom, and elimination of expensive and potentially toxic chemical pre-treatments.
