Disease in history Princes and peasants: smallpox in his tory D onald R. Hopkins 3 8 0 p a g e s with illustrations. In d ex . $25. Chicago, University o f C hicago Press, 1983

Princes and Peasants is a scholarly mas terpiece on the history and effects of dis ease on the world’s populations and his tory. In this case, the subject is smallpox. This well-written, easy-to-read book covers the subject in a fascinating narra tive including history, science, religion, and man’s final victory over this great slayer. Although dentistry is not men tioned, this text is an enticing view of the mechanics of disease and its effect on politics, wealth, and cultural survival. The most interesting part of this text is the explanation of how history was shaped by the great epidemics that killed rulers and peasants by the hundreds of millions. The author vividly details how our history and culture were shaped by the wars and politics that resulted from smallpox epidemics. Most of native North America was de populated within 50 years of the arrival of the Spanish who brought smallpox to this continent. The depopulation of North America enabled an otherwise impossi ble colonization by Europeans. The world slave trade did not cease because of mo rality or nations’ thoughts of freedom; rather, the threat of smallpox from slaves encouraged the end of this practice. The fortunes of many countries rose and fell with the smallpox deaths of their rulers and people. The wealthy often suffered

more than the peasants because only the rich could afford “bleeding,” the often fatal popular treatment for the disease. It was smallpox that saved Canada from an otherwise successful invasion by the American revolutionary army. This is a book that cannot be put down until its conclusion. It is well illustrated and indexed. I recommend this text for anyone interested in history, politics, and the health sciences. E. /. This edition of the classic text in dental anatomy, physiology, and occlusion has been revised to make it more useful as a basis for course content and reading as signments. Chapters on the anatomy of the permanent dentition are unchanged. Chapters on occlusion have been ex tended to include neurobehavioral as pects. Material in these chapters has been chosen to indicate that occlusion in a d u lts re fle cts h o m e o s ta tic an d nonhomeostatic mechanisms (including learning) that shape and sharpen ongoing functions. The neurobehavioral and structural changes that occur in de velopment from fetal life to young adult hood also are covered. Some new illus trations have been added, some illustra tions have been replaced, and the lists of references cited have been updated to in clude some as current as 1982.

The objectives of this text are to reinforce knowledge acquired in lectures on dental radiology, and to serve as a reference guide for the clinical application of pro cedures learned in those lectures, a ref erence after completion of courses in dental radiology, and a source of informa tion for dental personnel. Chapters from the first edition are revised and updated. Six new chapters have been added cover ing radiation biology, quality assurance, interpretation, normal anatomy, dental disease interpretation, and develop mental anomalies. Because of the revi sions and additions, this edition has new tables and illustrations and has doubled in length. However, omitted from this edition are the appendixes that provided inform ation on manufacturers of ra diographic equipment and materials, and the glossary of radiographic terms.
