APPLI CATI e N, B r i g h t f u t u r e for GRP tanks in India GLASS fibre r e i n f o r c e d plastic (GRP) underground storage tanks are being used to p r o t e c t the e n v i r o n m e n t and c o n serve scarce p e t r o l e u m products in India. The resistance of oil companies to accepting GRP t an k s b e c a u s e o f their initial high cost was t e m p e r e d by an extensive promotional campaign launched by Indian glass fibre m a n u f a c t u r e r FGP Ltd. This was supported by the moulding community, and leading government institutes and regulatory authorities, such as the Department of Explosives. The result is a brighter future for GRP tanks in India. The country's largest

oil company, Indian Oil, a $6 billion firm, installed a 20 000 litre GRP tank in February 1994 at Kandla, a coastal area with a high water table. Based on its successful experience with this tank, Indian Oil is r e p o r t e d to be going ahead with further trials across the country before the end of this year. Another oil company, Bharat Petroleum, a $2 billion c o m p a n y , installed two 20 000 litre GRP tanks in D e c e m b e r 1989 in the coastal areas o f U r a n a n d Talasari. These tanks w e r e manufactured by Graphite Vicarb India Ltd, located at Nasik, using t e c h n o l o g y from Norwegian company Veroc, a licensee of

A FIRE tuck body has compartments free from corrosion, electrolysis and cracking thanks to t h e use of p u l t r u d e d parts. US t r u c k manufact u r e r A m e r i c a n LaFrance, of Bluefield, Virginia, has desi gned and built the truck body using pultrud~d components to form the floors, vertical sides and tops of c o m p a r t m e n t s above the rear wheels. External ribs are used for rigidity and strength. According to the company, the pultruded parts provide a b e t t e r s u r f a c e fi ni sh than can be achieved

w i t h steel. P u ltru sio n also grants b e t t e r design flexibility, allowing e n g i n e e r s to fabricate parts with moulded supp o r t ribs, offsets for recessed doors, built-in ducts for ventilation and i n t e r l o c k i n g ribs. Another advantage is that t h e parts, w h i c h are bolted to one another and ont o a steel subf r a m e , can easily be replaced. The custom-made pultruded parts are supplied by US firm Creative Pultrusions. Kimberly Bakale, Creative Pultrusions; tel: + 1-814-839-4186; f a x : + 1-814-839-4276.
