EQ Mitsubishi targets large drives market Mitsubishi p l a n s to t r a n s f o r m its i m a g e in t h e UK m a r k e t with t h e i n t r o d u c t i o n of inverters u p to 450 kW. This is five t i m e s t h e p o w e r of t h e i r p r e s e n t m a x i mum. Drives of t h i s size a r e u s e d to p o w e r p u m p s , fans, e x t r u d e r s a n d blowers in t h e p r o c e s s industries. Meltrac is a new r a n g e of digital, high p o w e r IGBT variable frequency drives. There a r e seven sizes available to c o n t r o l t h r e e p h a s e AC m o t o r s of u p to 75, 110, 150, 220, 280, 375 a n d s h o r t l y 450 kW. Even t h o u g h t h e y serve very different m a r kets, t h e design engineers see t h e m a s an e x t e n s i o n of t h e p r e s e n t range. They can all be c o n t r o l l e d with t h e FR-PU02E p a r a m e t e r u n i t t h a t fits t h e s m a l l e r drives. Mitsubishi believes these drives are considerably smaller a n d lighter t h a n anything currently available. The c o m p a c t chassis design a d a p t s to a variety of enclosures a n d features e x t e n d i b l e h e a t sinks to further reduce p a n e l size. The 280 kW model m e a s u r e s only 1010 m m x 496 m m x 380 m m deep. Low noise is very i m p o r t a n t with large drives a n d so Meltrac i n c l u d e s a u n i q u e white noise system t h a t r e d u c e s t h e a u d i b l e m o t o r noise perceived by t h e h u m a n ear. A r a n d o m p a t t e r n of output carrier frequencies m a s k s t h e n o r m a l noise identification a s s o c i a t e d with a fixed c a r r i e r frequency. T h e r e a r e m o r e t h a n 150 parameters, including time, d a t e a n d speed, b u t t h e s e drives can be o p e r a t e d a n d commiss i o n e d quickly, u s i n g a selfcommission function. Autom a t i c energy savings a r e also possible with the improved A u t o m a t i c Energy O p t i m i s a t i o n c o n t r o l system with self learning mode. A DC link choke is s t a n d a r d to i m p r o v e t h e t o t a l s y s t e m p o w e r factor to n e a r 90%, including all h a r m o n i c s , b u t being m i n d f u l of t h e e n v i r o n m e n t h a s led Mitsubishi to release this
