Vacuum pump circulates rare gas Model ES35 rotary vacuum pump, produced by Edwards High Vacuum Limited, has been successfully used to pump helium s in a thermometer calibration cryostat developed by D r P L Smith at the Standards Division of the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington. The great expense of the isotope demanded extreme care in the design and manufacture of equipment, ensuring loss-free circulation. With a slightly modified shaft seal the fully sealed body design of the ES35 pump has proved to be reliable in operation. Three larger pumps of the same standard design have recently been acquired by the Standards Division for use on similar applications. Vacuum sintering plant Kennametal (Great Britain) Ltd, Birmingham, have opened a new sintering plant for the production of cemented carbide products widely used in metal cutting equipment and the machine tool industry. Mixtures of the carbides of tungsten, titanium, tantalum and niobium are compacted by means of a binding agent which is usually cobalt. A key feature of the manufacturing process is the sintering of the formed carbide pieces under a vacuum of 10 microns Hg which allows a high degree of quality control during the complex sintering reaction. Specifications of all available Kennametal products are presented in a comprehensive series of brochures. Kennametal (Great Britain) L t d Circle number 53 on Reader Enquiry Service card

Quadrupole gas analyzer continuously monitors atmospheric composition By means of a Quadrupole Residual Gas Analyzer, developed and supplied by Varian Associates, California, USA, the vital atmospheric components within the deep submersible research vessel, Precontinent III was maintained to accuracies within one-hundredth of a percent. The unit successfully operated throughout the 22-day submersion of J Cousteau's "House under the Sea". Evacuation of the gas analyzer was achieved by an 80 litre/second Varian Vaclon pump which was housed in a stainless steel container pressurized to sea level to support the pump under the vehicle's 10 kg/cm = pressure. Inlet to the Analyzer element was provided by a variable leak detector and only gases other than helium, the main atmospheric constituent in the vessel, were detected. The analyzer tube is made of nonmagnetic stainless steel with ceramic insulators and is of modular design with oxygen-free gaskets for easy disassembly, cleaning and part replacement. The entire analyzer unit weighs about 400 lb. Varian Associates (Vacuum Division), USA Circle number 51 on Reader Enquiry Service card

New ABC Space Simulator Line A n improved line of ABC thermal-vacuum simulators have been announced by Termey Engineering Inc. These self-contained units are claimed to offer virtually any required work space, temperature and vacuum at "off-the-shelf" cost and delivery. Temperatures in ranges between minus 320 and plus 350 degrees Fahrenheit, vacua down to 1 x 10-° tort and chamber work space varying between 1 and I0 feet in diameter are available. These simulators are described and illustrated in a recently published bulletin which includes information on many components such as cryogenic shrouds, baffles and thermal conditioners of the mechanically refrigerated and gaseous nitrogen type.
