Sealless pumps for CO2 applications in UK refrigeration industry Hermetic pumps are of monobloc design (pump and motor share a common shaft) and as such are quieter, more compact and easier to install than conventional pumps. They do not require a base plate, couple or coupling guard, nor is there a need for alignment of motor and pump to ensure totally leak-free operation.
Axflow CNF Cross-Section.
AxFlow Limited has introduced a 40 bar design of sealless centrifugal pumps for CO2 applications for the UK refrigeration industry. The three hermetically sealed centrifugal pumps that now offer nominal pressures up to 40 bar are the
CNF, CAM and CAMR models, which all operate using the canned motor principle, thereby removing the require-ment for any shaft seal. They have all been developed specifically for the refrigeration industries, Axflow says.
Repeater pump from Baxa passes the test In the tests, the Repeater Pump exhibited no adverse effects on performance or accuracy of operations during the thirdparty testing. Therefore, the Repeater Pump is suitable for use in environments such as isolators or cleanrooms that are subject to repeated gassing with hydrogen peroxide vapour, Baxa claims.
Baxa’s pharmacy peristaltic filling pump tested successfully.
Baxa Ltd, based in Berkshire, UK, has announced that its Repeater Pump (099E) pharmacy peristaltic filling pump has tested successfully through 26 gas sterilisation cycles at one cycle per day with hydrogen peroxide vapour. Bioquell Ltd, manufacturers of the Clarushydrogen peroxide gas generator system, performed the tests for Baxa.

Hydrogen peroxide vapour provides an effective and reproducible sporicidal sterilising method for dealing with a wide range of bacteria, viruses and fungi. Typical gassing frequency in hospital aseptic units is once a week, but this may vary according to application. The Repeater Pump was the first designed to meet needs specific to the hospital pharmacy. A highly accurate pump, it is is said to be strong enough to deliver viscous fluids, yet precise enough to deliver very low volumes.
The CAM and CAMR 40 bar models are built with two to five impeller stages to suit the application and offer a capacity of up to 50m3/h and a head of up to 130 m, Axflow reports. The CAMR series is a special version designed for compact plants with small collecting vessels. This enables space saving by mounting the pump directly under the vessel.
It also permits gas to escape through the suction port, allowing shorter re-starting times. The Hermetic CNF series differs in that it is a single stage pump with an additional impeller, enabling pumping of fluids with a steep vapour pressure diagram. The double containment design, which is free of a shaft sealing device makes the canned motor pump 100% leak free, claims Axflow; even if a stator line ruptures there will be no leakage to atmosphere. In addition, the absence of mechanical seals and the employment of maintenance free slide bearings, as opposed to roller bearings, ensure optimised MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure).
Solids handing pump offers improved performance Gorman-Rupp has introduced a solids handling, self-priming centrifugal pump which, the company claims, offers performance levels not previously achieved by selfpriming pumps of this type. The Ultra V, which is available in a variety of sizes, has higher pressure, higher flow, greater efficiency and time saving maintenance features, Gorman-Rupp says. It can achieve up to 60% increased pressure and up to 40% increased flow over any selfpriming centrifugal solids handling pump of the same size, the company adds. When system requirements exceed the Ultra V’s performance range of a single stage pump, it can be configured with a second stage – the UltraMate – that is able to increase maximum pressure up to 300%, Gorman-Rupp says.
The UltraMate is mounted directly to the discharge of the Ultra V via an transition chamber that can reduce the loss associated with conventional series connected pumps. According to GormanRupp, his mount also helps minimize the footprint of the pumps.
