The regular p r o g r a m m e of c o u r s e s and s e m i n a r s p l a n n e d for the C e n t r e for the year 1991 by the S c i e n t i f i c C o u n c i l , took place in the two S c i e n t i f i c Sessions, the B U N S E N S e s s i o n (June-July, 1991) and the M A X W E L L S e s s i o n ( S e p t e m b e r - O c t o b e r , 1991). The topics, as always at an a d v a n c e d level, i n c l u d e d d i f f e r e n t fields of m e c h a n i c a s and r e l a t e d c o m p u t e r s c i e n c e s , both at a basic and a p p l i e d level. Some courses and s e m i n a r s were s p o n s o r e d by U N E S C O and CNR (National R e s e a r c h Council of Italy). The

This U N E S C O p r o j e c t has been made p o s s i b l e by a c o n t r i b u t i o n of the G e n e r a l D i r e c t o r a t e of C o o p e r a t i o n to D e v e l o p m e n t of the Italian M i n i s t r y for F o r e i g n Affairs. IUTAM I n t e r n a t i o n a l S u m m e r School on M o d e l l i n g of Defect and F r a c t u r e M e c h a n i c s ( S e p t e m b e r 2-6, 1991) The latest d e v e l o p m e n t s of m o d e l l i n g v a r i o u s types of d e f e c t s such as m i c r o - c r a c k s , m i c r o - v o i d s , d i s l o c a t i o n s , p h a s e c h a n g e s p r e c e d i n g gross f r a c t u r e s were d i s c u s s e d in the School, p r o v i d ing the p a r t i c i p a n t s with the n e c e s s a r y k n o w - h o w and the overall p i c t u r e of the s t a t e - o f - t h e - a r t . The I n t e r n a t i o n a l Journal for rapid p u b l i c a t i o n " M E C H A N I C S REREARCH C O M M U N I C A T I O N S " (bimontly), created by CISM and Pergamon Press, O x f o r d - N e w York in 1973), p u b l i s h e d in 1991 its eighteenth volume. It c o n t a i n s short c o m m u n i c a t i o n s on research related to a wide domain of both t h e o r e t i c a l and a p p l i e d Mechanics. The journal, w h o s e Editor in Chief is P r o f e s s o r Bruno A.Boley, plays and i m p o r t a n t r6le in i m p l e m e n t i n g CISM's aims and activities.

4. Scholarships A limited number of s c h o l a r s h i p s , including free lodging and board, was offered during the courses to p a r t i c i p a n t s who were not supported by their home institutions, p r i o r i t y being given to young r e s e a r c h e r s coming from c o u n t r i e s that c o n t r i b u t e to CISM's o p e r a t i n g resources. Travel expenses as well as board and lodging of p a r t i c i p a n t s from d e v e l o p i n g c o u n t r i e s have been covered by UNESCO c o n t r i b u t i o n .

5. International P a r t i c i p a t i o n In 1991, 57 lecturers from 14 c o u n t r i e s d e l i v e r e d lectures in the BUNSEN and M A X W E L L Sessions. The two Sessions were a t t e n d e d by 377 p a r t i c i p a n t s from 31 countries. Besides, the i n t e r n a t i o n a l m e e t i n g s were attended by n u m e r o u s p a r t i c i p a n t s from European and extra European countries.
