Through the many acts, laws and regulations that have been passed the reader may now obtain any available information on a product, its recommended dosages and effectiveness, the animal and human safety data, and the agencies’ conclusions on the product. This publication covers human pharmaceuticals and medical devices, food additives, consumer products (cosmetics, topical over-thecounter and nonpersonal care), agricultural and industrial chemicals, occupational health safety and hazard communications, oversight regulations and - of special interest to veterinarians - animal health products. That specific chapter discusses new animal drugs, generic drugs, target animal safety, toxicity studies, safety assessment case reports, risk assessment, and the veterinary use of human pharmaceuticals. The book informs the reader on how the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) regulate industries and the manufacturers. It presents the problems encountered before regulatory agencies and their mandates were enforced, and then provides the regulations currently in effect. are not fully understood. The primary focus of this volume is on toxic actions in the hypothalamopituitary-gonadal target organ systems of mammals, with some discussion on mutagenic and teratogenic effects. The first of 3 sections is an excellent review on the current concepts of normal mammalian male and female reproductive function, including pregnancy and lactation, from systems to subcellular level, and provides a physiologic basis for explaining the actions and reactions of the reproductive toxicants discussed in subsequent chapters. The second section explains how toxic substances disrupt the normal functioning of the gonad, sex accessory organs and hypothalamic-pituitary regulatory relationships in males and nonpregnant and pregnant women including the parturition and lactation periods. It also includes a risk assessment perspective on reproductive toxicity testing. The third section discusses current and long-term issues, such as clinical aspects, epidemiology and the toxic effects of iowenergy electromagnetic fields and tobacco, alcohol and other substances of abuse. The mechanismbased, physiologically oriented approach is also used in the third section. This publication presents the major principles and current issues in the field and applies a comprehensive approach to integrating physiological mechanisms to actions of toxic agents upon the reproductive system. It would be of immediate interest to toxicologists, laboratory investigators, and scholars in related disciplines. As the 2nd edition of a volume originally published 10 years earlier and edited by Bob Dixon, originator of this Target Organ Toxicology series, it is disappointing that recognition is not given to Doctor Dixon’s foresight and initiating energies - but this current volume offers new information and progresses well down the footpath first established a decade ago.
