margins on carbon black pigments are considerably higher than the margins on rubber grades. The average unit value of pigment grades is normally nearly twice as high as the average unit value of rubber grades. However, in volume terms, pigment grades normally account for less than 20% of the total sales tonnage. For the first nine months of 2011, Orion reported earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) at €140.8 M on sales revenues of €1.037 bn, derived from selling 850,000 tonnes of carbon black, including 140,000150,000 tonnes of pigment grades. The company reported a sharp drop of 15% in pigment sales, comparing 3Q and 2Q 2011: this was attributable primarily to cutbacks in demand from paintmakers in Asia and Europe. Rowa transfers masterbatch production to Polyvel site Rowa Inc has decided to shut down its plastics masterbatch and compounds operations at Delran, NJ, transferring them to the Hammonton, NJ, site owned by Polyvel Inc. Three extrusion lines were transferred from Delran to Hammerton during August and September 2011. In total, there will be ten twin-screw extruders operating at Hammonton, producing plastics masterbatches and custom plastic compounds. During the 1990s, Polyvel had worked with Rowa as a toll compounder, but the two companies became involved in a trade-secrets lawsuit after Polyvel co-founder Mr Paul Albee left to join Rowa Inc. Ms Helen LoSasso, the other co-founder of Polyvel, had sold her shares in the company to her two sons and Mr Brian Tidwell (the current President of Polyvel). The lawsuit was settled last December. Although the two companies are now sharing production facilities, it is not yet clear whether this amounts to a joint venture operation or whether Polyvel has effectively acquired Rowa Inc, which had been a wholly-owned
subsidiary within the Hamburg-based Rowa group. Original Source: Plastics News, 26 Sep 2011, (Website: http://www.plasticsnews.com) © Crain Communications Inc 2011

Sudarshan buys natural mica pearlescents business from Eckart Effective 23 January 2012, Sudarshan Chemical Industries Ltd (part of the Rathi group) acquired the natural mica pearlescent pigments business of Eckart Effect Pigments (part of the Altana group). This includes all rights to the brandnames Prestige and Flonac-C, products that are currently manufactured at Eckart’s complex in Pori (Finland). Eckart itself acquired the natural mica pearlescent pigments business from Kemira at the beginning of 2008 and it promptly consolidated activities at Pori which had previously been spread across the Pori and Siilinjärvi sites. Although it is relinquishing its position in the natural mica pearlescent pigment sector, Eckart will continue to make and sell pearlescent pigments based on borosilicates and on synthetic mica, targeting mainly cosmetics formulators. Sudarshan already manufactures natural mica pearlescent pigments at its Roha and Mohad complexes in the Maharashtra province of India. It sells these products under the brandname Sumicos for applications in cosmetics, paints and inks. Production of Prestige and Flonac-C pigments will be transferred to Maharashtra, with immediate effect.
