A thermoplastic has replaced metal Jn a radiator for watercooling small motorcycle engines. The upper and lower water tanks have been made of a a glass-reinforced polyamide, This radiator, manufactured by L~ngerer and Reich for 50 cc engines, forms an integral part of the engine block and incorporates thermostat control and a mechanical pump for the control of water circulation, The designers chose a thermoplastic because it can be injection moulded, a simpler and less expensive process than machining and processing metal - they felt that this also gave them greater design flexibility. Also, thermoplastics have greater selfdamping than metal, and since the radiator is on top of the engine, this means that it suffers less from engine vibration, The thermoplastic chosen, glass-reinforced "Zytel" 66 polyamide, manufactured by Du Pont, was selected after testing and after being compared with specifications on resistance to temperature (up to 110°C), internal pressure and chemical

The school is on the Greenford premises of Prestcold, and is jointly sponsored by them and by J.Sainsbury. They hope that the school will also be of use to associated contractors, manufacturers, architects and others involved with refrigeration systems for supermarkets.

Sainsbury, a large supermarket chain, in aspects of refrigeration• The equipment consists of two six-cylinder semi-hermetic cornpressors manufactured by Prestcold, plus a six row condenser and liquid receivers, oil vessels and headers. This pack is connected to seven display cases and a small modular coldroom. The display cabinets include models for dairy produce, fresh and frozen meat,,ce cream and frozen foods, and general provisions. ]-hey can be defrosted by hot gas or electric heating. The control panel which would normally be fitted to the condenser/compressor pack has been produced as a free-

Frequent sandstorms in the Abu Dhabi desert have made it necessary to instal heavy duty air filters to ensure constant operation of a cold storage depot. The depot contains food for 12 000 construction workers throughout the desert. No mains supply is available so three generating sets have been installed. The sets are rated at 200 KW, 250 kVA and powered by Rolls-Royce C8T turbo-charged diesel engines. The manufacturers, Petbow, have adapted the machines to deal with high temperatures and humidity. It is essential that the cold
