Second International Conference on Erosive and Abrasive Wear (ICEAW II)
This volume contains papers presented at the Second International Conference on Erosive and Abrasive Wear (ICEAW II), incorporating ELSI X. The conference was held at Churchill College, Cambridge, England from 22 to 25 September 2003. ICEAW II attracted more than 125 attendees from academia and industry. One hundred and twenty papers were presented: 40 orally and 80 as posters. The conference ran as a single session thus stimulating debate and discussion. Authors were invited to contribute their papers for publication in this Special Issue. We were delighted with the response of the authors and the referees and must thank them all for their speedy response that allowed us to produce this volume of some 80 papers, which have been through a stringent peer-review process. We must also thank the staff at Elsevier who organised the conference and supervised the editorial process, as well as the Editor-in-Chief of Wear and his office for guidance throughout the editorial process. We hope that the reader enjoys these proceedings and will be sufficiently excited in the subject to feel that they will make a journey to the next ICEAW conference. Robert J.K. [email protected] Chairman’s message This was the second ICEAW conference, which followed a distinguished series of earlier meetings on erosion (ELSI—International Conference on Liquid and Solid Impact), which covered all aspects of erosion by the impact of liquids or solids. Both the present meeting and its predecessor in 1998 attracted many delegates who contributed papers on erosion, erosion–corrosion and abrasive wear. I am very grateful to my colleagues Anne Neville, John Williams and Robert Wood for their support and hard work as members of the Organising Committee, and especially to Anne and Robert for taking on the heavy task of editing this Special Issue of Wear. The ELSI conferences held from 1979 to 1987 owed a great deal to John Field, whose energy and enthusiasm as Conference Secretary played a major role in their success. John retired from his Professorship at the University of Cambridge in September 2003, and to mark this event and his contribution over many years to the conference series, a special symposium was dedicated to him. ICEAW II was generously sponsored by the Taiho Kogyo Tribology Research Foundation (TTRF) of Japan and by the Tribology Group of the Institute of Physics, and we gratefully acknowledge their valuable support.
