equipment. The second is an examination of the selected equipment under working conditions. The results of the assessment are presented to the client in the form of a critical report. Equipment design. Where equipment required for a particular application is not available "off the shelf" E R A will undertake its design and construction. In addition, working drawings and instructions for the construction of a range of vacuum deposition equipment designed by, and already in use at, E R A are available. E R A has pioneered many developments in vacuum deposition techniques. They were among the first to build simple, cheap, radio frequency sputtering systems of the balanced self-excited type. Their activities have not, however, been confined to small coating systems. They were for example, recently engaged in the design of a space simulation chamber. This fund of practical experience, together with freedom from direction by governmental or industrial agencies, enables the Applied Sciences Division to provide impartial advice towards the solution of clients' problems. The Division is also able to enlist the expertise of a number of complementary services within ERA. Electrical Research Association Circle number 38 on Reader Enquiry Service card

Airco Temescal subsidiary Airco Temescal, a subsidiary of Air Reduction Co Inc, have formed a wholly owned subsidiary called Airco Temescal NV with headquarters at Schiphol East in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The headquarters in Amsterdam will consist of a bonded warehouse, display room, service facilities and office space. An inventory of all Temescal's Standard Products will be maintained in the warehouse for convenient delivery to any point in Europe. The managing director will be Mr. Joseph de Bie, a chemical engineer, who has spent the last nineteen years in the capital equipment field, the last eleven years being in the high-vacuum equipment field. Linear actuator A four-page sheet from Airco Temescal describes a line of Linear Actuators and Shutters which operate pneumatically. The Linear Actuator provides a ½ inch power stroke at any location in the vacuum system, because the vacuum feedthrough and the pneumatic actuator are two distinctly separate items. The Shutter Assembly, which is a novel design by Temescal, operates by converting a linear power stroke into rotational motion. Complete details including a cross-section view, table of stroke force versus gas pressure, materials of construction, outline drawings and dimensions are described in this new brochure. Conference and group activities Seminar on surface physics of semiconductors Following the successful seminar on Defects in Semiconductors held at Reading in April, 1970, the Institute of Physics is organizing a seminar on Surface Physics of Semiconductors to be held at the University of Southampton from 10-12 January, 1972. The objects of the seminar are twofold: (1) to provide for younger industrial scientists a short set of lectures about the fundamental properties and current knowledge of surface physics of semiconductors and; (2) to have a series of discussions between all participants on the basic surface physics of semiconductors and the role of surfaces in the development of devices, led by people from industry, universities and government laboratories who have experience in this field. The session on the first day will be concerned with basic surface properties and epitaxy of Silicon and III-V compounds. Invited speakers for this session will be: Dr. B. A. Joyce (Mullards Research Laboratory, Redhill), Dr. F. Badcock (Hirst Research Centre, GEC Limited), Dr B D Joyce (Royal Radar Establishment, Malvern) and Dr G R Booker (University of Oxford). The second days session will deal with semiconductor interfaces with metals and insulators: their electrical and device aspects. Invited speakers for this session will be: Professor E H Rhoderick (UMIST, Manchester), D r D R Lamb (University of Southampton), Mr G F Vanstone (Royal Radar Establishment, Malvern) and Dr C Sims (Services Electronics Research Laboratories, Baldock). It is planned to limit the attendance to about seventy participants, the selection being made by the organizers. Further details and application forms will be available in August, 1971 from the Meetings Officer, The Institute of Physics, 47 Belgrave Square, London, SW 1.
