GROUND ~GNG,V9, N1,JAN.1976, P23-28. Cadeby Colliery is taken as a typical British lagoon during filling and behaviour during s.nd after filling is discussed. The authors conclude that the m~terial in the lagoon tested behaves as anticipated for a soft clay deposit, but that other lagoons have differences in the residue and the method of deposition, and that consequently great care must be taken in extrapolating from one lagoon to another.

This paper considers the effect of horizontal displacemerits of a soil medium upon the behavior of a pile group and describes a method for determination of the transverse displacements, b ~ d i n g moments, shear and longitudinal forces in the piles. 401 BYKOV,VI Experimental investigations of performance of horizontally loaded pile foundations. SO YL MECH .FOUND.~GNG. V12, N2,1975, P102-104. SOIL MECH .FOUND.ENGNG .VI2,N2,1975, P99- lO1. A short analytical comparison of static and dynamic pile penetration tests conducted in clay and sandy soils is presented.

The writers present various points relating to the analysis of a large-panel building on a statistically heterogensous foundation bed whose nonuniform compressibility is determined by the modulus of subgrade reaction.

SOIL MECH.FOUND. ~ G N G .VI2,N2,1975, PIll- i13. ~ e writers discuss the possibility of determining the settlements of structures on thawed and plastic-frozen soils, on the basis of the usual data from site investigation for the variation of the porosity of the undisturbed soil with depth.

4O4 KoZAR, NA BOR ISOV ,SM Experience with use of pile foundations in rural construction in Kazakhstan. SOIL MECH .FOUND.ENGNG, V12, N3,1975, P150-153. The authors illustrate cases of the use of short, driven and cast-in-place piles to support residential, school and agricultural construction. To assist in the design of the pile foundations they use static probe tests and also recommend use of engineerlng-geologic surveys and dynamic pile tests.

405 KISELEV,MF SAFONOV,VS SHUBAROVA, NP Construction of agricultural structures on heaving so ils. SOIL MECH .FOUND. ~GNG, VI2, N3,1975, P154-157. The depth of foundations on heaving soils depends on their depth of freezing, since under the effect of the tangential forces of frost heave considerable nonuniform displacement of shallow foundations can occur. The authors organised observations of the depth of freezing of soils on four exper~m~%tal greenhouse plots, in order to determine the necessary foundation depth.

SOIL MECH .FOUND.~GNG, VI2, N3,1975, P158-160 • The authors recommend precautions for construction in areas of fill and made up ground. These include compaction of the base of the foundation excavation, provision of Jacking facilities, incorporation of basements, and rigid design of s~ 1 1 buildings on s~A11~ foundations.
