Book Review "Signaliibertragung, Grundlagen der digitalen und analogen Naehriehteniibertragungssysteme"...
Book Review "Signaliibertragung, Grundlagen der digitalen und analogen Naehriehteniibertragungssysteme", by Hans Dieter LI)KE. Publishers: Springer-Verlag, Tiergartenstr. 17, Postfach 105280, W-6900 Heidelberg 1, Germany, 1990, xiii + 299 pp., ISBN 3-54052177-1, ISBN 0-387-52177-1. The book 'Signaliibertragung', written in German by Professor Hans Dieter Liike, appears now in its fourth edition and seems to become a classic. As said in its subtitle it covers the basics of analog and digital transmission systems. The first two sections treat linear and timeinvariant signals and introduce the Fourier transform. Very useful is the introduction of 8sequences with the 'sha-function' which leads in a very elegant way to sampling theorems and finally to the DFT. The theory of systems is covered in Chapter 5 following the classical approach of KiipfmiJller and Papoulis. The introduction of stochastic processes avoids unnecessary mathematical definitions and proofs, it rather focuses on engineering understanding. The two chapters about modulation contain all the necessary information needed in the field. However, digital modulation schemes such as FSK, MSK and CPM are treated too briefly relative to the broad treatment of analog FM. Two chapters on multiplex system and basics of information theory conclude the book. Liike succeeds to treat

the basics of Shannons's information theory in a brief and very readable way. A minor inaccuracy concerns equation (8.70) which is valid only for Gaussian and not for binary input signals, although it leads to the same result for the Shannon limit. In the reviewer's opinion, No should be defined as kT and not as 2kT in accordance with almost all publications in the English literature. The 3 d B difference in all E/No curves is too confusing. Unfortunately the excellent book by Proakis is not mentioned in the reference list. Very nice are the historical remarks and the credits given to inventors. What makes the book very useful for students is the summary at the end of each chapter and the abundant use of figures and illustrations (219 and excl). An excellent tool for teachers and students is the extensive collection of very instructive problems, with solutions given at the end of the book. In summary, Liike's book is highly recommended for students and for the practising communications engineer. It is probably the best book which is available in German in the field of signal transmission.
