Simulation of cyclic pressuremeter testing is presented, using the generalised elastoplastic constitutive model of Zienkiewicz et al (1985). An interpolation parameter is introduced which permits simulation of plastic strains inside the yield surface, which is important for the description of cyclic testing. According to the value assigned to this interpolation parameter, phenomena such as adaptation, accommodation, or ratchet can be modelled.

Large strain finite element modelling is then presented of a multistage triaxial test and a biaxial test. The constitutive model used consists of an elastoplastic part coupled in parallel with a Maxwell model. The elastoplastic part is based on an extended Cam Clay concept which incorporates an isotropic and kinematic hardening rule. The deviatoric section for both yielding and potential surface is defined using a relation which allows a smooth transition between the Coulomb hexagon and the von Mises circle, making possible the accurate description of complex stress paths.

An information-oriented system, developed as a management tool for the construction of the offshore island for Kansai International Airport, is described. The system has 5 subsystems: work result management; deposition configuration management; reclamation configuration management;measurement/survey process; and earth volume management. A virtual grid of 10m squares, the minimum unit for earth volume management and settlement calculation, is placed on the objective operating area. Work result data, including coordinates, azimuth-angle, and earth volume, are contributed into deposition earth volume for each grid and consolidation calculations and earth volume management carried out.

The interaction matrix concept is introduced and applications to rock engineering demonstrated. Small (4x4) matrices are presented which show interdependence of discontinuity geometry parameters and of rock mass structure, in situ stress, water flow, and engineering construction. Other matrices illustrate the fundamental modes of rock fracture and relations between normal, wrench, and thrust faulting. Applications from project checklist to the logical basis of project design are expected for this novel approach.

Planning for an open pit mine must take into account constraints on overall pit slope stability (geological, structural, geotechnical) and economic and technical constraints for design of intermediate and ultimate pits. A computer program, DEGRES, has been developed to assist in this planning. It considers individual slopes and their steps and intersections between slopes. It has been tested for the case of the SainteMarie coal mine in Carmaux, France.

Mine engineers and managers are faced with the problems of evaluation, selection, and implementation of the optimum mining systems. Simulation techniques allow examination of certain options before implementation. An interactive technique for modelling mine systems for simulation purposes is presented. The most important concepts of the model are object-oriented modelling and graphical visualisation of the model. After the graphical model of the system has been constructed, it can be converted to a simulation model. The method presented can be applied to mine transport and systems configuration.
