THANKS to Duraglas cladding, a colourful and relaxing environment is helping to reduce patient stress and anxiety in a newly-opened Day Care Centre at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield, UK. Supplied in a peppermint-green satin finish, the thermoplastic sheet is used in the operating theatre, scrub-down areas and anaesthetic room. As well as being aesthetically pleasing, the material was selected for the &5 million centre because it meets all the necessary hygiene and fire rating standards. Particularly important for this project was the suitability of Duraglas for use in operating theatres employing the latest laser surgical tech-

PEEK replaces metal on Airbus DEUTSCHE Airbus GmbH has specified Victrex polyetheretherketone (PEEK) engineering thermoplastic as the construction material for a unique cable guide system. The patented design replaces a metal system and uses extruded tube and injection moulded fittings made from Victrex PEEK 450GL30, a 30% glass reinforced grade. This material offers a high strength-toweight ratio and nonburning (UL VO) properties whilst also showing low smoke and toxic gas emission in fne tests. Of particular importance to Deutsche Airbus was the excellent chemical stability of Victrex
says supplier VT Plastics. Duraglas has glass fibre reinforcement which enhances its rigidity, strength and dimensional stability. It has a low coefficient of thermal ex-
PEEK. Tests showed it to be resistant not only to aircraft fuels and cleaning/degreasing chemicals but also to hydraulic fluids which were found to severely degrade many ordinary plastics. The use of PEEK has allowed Deutsche Airbus to reduce the weight of the original cable guide system whilst also enhancing its electrical performance by improving arc tracking resistance. Additionally, the corrosion protection treatment necessary with metal is no longer needed and the assembly stage has benefitted by removal of welding operations which were expensive and diIXcult to carry out.

pansion, good impact and chemical resistance, and can be easily formed around corners and pillars. Fixing of the 3 mm thick panels was by the Bostik pad, concealed adhesive system which ensures flush walls. Joints were filled with a silicone sealant providing easy-toclean surfaces. All bending and forming operations were carried out on-site. Duraglas is available in a choice of gloss, matt or textured finishes and in range of 16 standard colours. Special colours can also be produced in a sheet size of 2440 x 1220 mm and in thicknesses from 1.5-12 mm. VT PZastics Ltd; tel: + 44- 1909 770133; fax: + 44- 1909- 773 734.
SMC water tanks are safer in fires WATER storage tanks specifically designed for use in public buildings and other installations where smoke and toxic emissions must be minimized in the event of a fire have been introduced by BTR Permali RP. The new range of firesafe Hydroglas sectional tanks, like the standard Hydroglas range, are modular assemblies based on standard size glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) panels, bolted together with stainless steel fasteners and sealed with a specially developed polyisobutylene strip. The panels for the fire-safe tanks are
hot-press moulded from a special sheet moulding compound (SMC) incorporating a highly modified resin system rather than the standard polyesters. In addition, alumina trihydrate is used rather than conventional fire-resistant additives because of the need to eliminate halogens. There is also no source of phosphorus or antimony. The Hydroglas panels are also characterized by the inherent thermal and dimensional stability common to SMC. BTR Permali RP Ltd; tel: + 44- 1452528282; fax: + 441452-310533.
