SOCIETY AWARDS Gold Medal Award 1995 The Gold Medal award was established by the Society of Biological Psychiatry to honor pioneering contributions to the field. A gold medal and citation are given for significant and sustained work that advances and extends knowledge in biological psychiatry. The recipient is determined by the Committee listed below, subject to approval by the Council of the Society. The Committee is chaired by the current President and is composed of the immediate past Presidents of the Society. Committee members are not eligible for the Gold Medal Award. The following conditions apply: 1. All scientists working in the field of biological psychiatry including, but not limited to individuals from academic institutions, foundations, governmental, industrial and research organizations regardless of age, sex, race, or nationality shall be eligible. 2. Nominees need not be members of the Society of Biological Psychiau'y. 3. The decision of the Awards Committee shall be based on the nominee's scientific accomplishments, their independence, originality, and impact; their development of new concepts, theories and techniques, that constitute a definitive, mature, and significant contribution to knowledge sustained over a period of years. 4. The decision of the Award Committee shall be final, subject to approval by the Council of the Society. An award may be made every year, but the Awards Committee and the Council reserve the right to make no award in any year. 5. The President of the Society hereby requests nominations of one or two proposed recipients of the Gold Medal Award from each member of the Society by January 31, 1995. Nominations will also be accepted from members of other national or international scientific associations. 6. The President will contact nominations of the best possible candidates requesting additional information including a list of the candidate's major achievements, a curriculum vitae of the candidate, and up to ten of the candidate's most important publications. 7. Bennett Research Awards yy: The Society of Biological Psychiatry offers annual awards of $1,500 each in basic science and in clinical science for the purpose of stimulating international research in biological psychiatry by young investigators. These awards are made possible by the A.E. Bennett Neuropsychiatric Research Foundation. Guidelines 1. Candidates shall not have passed their ttfirty-fifth birthday on January 31, 1995. When more than one investigator is listed as an author of the submitted work, all must meet this requirement. 2. Although the research is not to be judged in comparison with the work of the more senior investigators, special consideration will be given to the originality of the approach and independence of thought evident in the submission.

The submission should be in the form of a manuscript that describes studies recently completed but not published or currently under consideration. George N. Thompson Founders Awardfor Distinguished Service 1995 The Society of Biological Psychiatry established the George N. Thompson Award for Distinguished Service in 1982. The award recognized Dr. George N. Thompson's role as one of the founders of the Society in 1944 and his contributions over the years to the growth of the Society. The award is intended to honor members of the Society who have given ot'.tstanding service to promote the welfare of the organization. The recipient may be honored for work in the areas of leadership, governance, development of publications, special projects, financial contributions, or other service recognized as distinguished by the Council. The award will be advertised yearly, but the Council reserves the right to make no award in any year. Nominations will be received until January 31, 1995 and should be sent by members of the Society to Dr. Robert G. Robinson at the address given below. The award committee listed below will recommend a recipient to the Council. Lilly Fellowship Award The training of a new generation of psychiatric academicians is a major objective of the Society of Biological Psychiatry. Participation in professional meetings, where new information is exchanged and contacts are made, can have a critical impact on the career of a developing clinicianscientist. In recognition of the importance of academic exchange, the Society of Biological Psychiatry, through an educational grant from Eli Lilly and Company, is pleased to announce the continuation of 10 to 15 annual Travel Fellowships. Each Fellowship will provide $1,500 to help defray the cost of attending the Society's Annual Meeting. In addition to the stipend and the opportunity to attend sessions of interest to them, Fellows also receive certificates of excellence and participate in a special ceremony held during the meeting in their honor. Awardees are expected to remain for the entire meeting. Each University Department of Psychiatry in the United States may nominate one candidate for this award. Only medical graduates in their third, fourth, or fifth year of residency or fellowship training are eligible for consideration. Recipients will be limited to one award during their training. In addition to a letter of nomination by the Department Chair and/or Training Director, applicants must submit a current curriculum vitae and a one-page statement of career interests and objectives. Additional letters of support for academic mentors are welcomed. Fellows will be selected on the basis of past excellence and potential for professional growth in activities pertaining to academic biological psychiatry and clinical neuroscience.
