Society for Vascular Nursing position statement on the role of the vascular advanced practice nurse Society for Vascular Nursing SUMMARY The vascular advanced practice nurse provides comprehensive, cost-effective, accessible specialized care in the specialties of vascular nursing and vascular disease.
PURPOSE The purpose of the position statement is to delineate the Society for Vascular Nursing’s recognition of the value of this role in the field of vascular nursing and vascular disease. The extended role of the vascular advanced practice nurse ensures a continuum of comprehensive care for patients with chronic vascular disease. Nurses in this extended role provide inpatient and outpatient care to patients with simple and complex vascular diagnoses. The primary focus is to direct and participate in comprehensive care. The vascular advanced practice nurse provides a nursing link to the interdisciplinary team in assessing and defining the required interventions. The vascular advanced practice nurse addresses the immediate and ongoing care needs of this specialty population. A secondary focus is the role of education, and support of the systems, research, consultation, and administration. provided to nursing and medical staff, patients, and families. The vascular advanced practice nurse’s role is clinical problem solving in a collaborative effort with the interdisciplinary team. This involvement of the vascular advanced practice nurse in consultation and problem solving provides a resource to determine and facilitate the best intervention and management for the given patient situation.1
CONCLUSION The vascular advanced practice nurse is a healthcare provider, with a master’s degree in nursing, who is qualified to provide efficient, effective care to the vascular patient population. The vascular advanced practice nurse possesses the skills to meet the ever-increasing demands of the vascular patient in today’s redesigned healthcare system. The vascular advanced practice nurse is a flexible provider who easily bridges the boundaries of medical and nursing practice, giving the best possible comprehensive care to the vascular patient. The vascular advanced practice nurse provides innovative evidence-based practice through direct care services, care coordination, continuity of care, and outcome management. Within a collaborative structure, the vascular advanced practice nurse is an indispensable care provider for the vascular patient population.
