Soft-face membrane reduces transducer wear A series of soft-face ultrasonic longitudinal transducers has been added by Sonatest to its existing high specification transducer ranges. When used on abrasive surfaces the SLF series of transducers can be fitted with a soft-faced membrane of plasticized polyurethane to give improved surface contact and also to protect the transducer against wear. For high temperature surface testing, up to 400°C, the membrane is replaced by a heat-resistant delay line with low thermal conductivity.

Transducer ranges expanded Other Sonatest transducer ranges have been expanded with new models--the SLP high damped/low profile transducers, SLH high damped transducers and SLM medium damped transducers. SLP transducers, says the company, are for entry into spaces that are inaccessible to other single longitudinal transducers. They are made with lead metaniobate, low

noise elements to optimize far surface resolution and gain. A thick-walled stainless steel casing and ceramic face give extended wear life. SLH and SLM transducers conform to similar specifications but additionally have steel wear rings fitted as standard.

A He-Ne laser suitable for inspection and gauging applications has been designed to withstand inservice knocks. Aerotech's LT05R Microtube can withstand up to 500 g for 1 ms, which the company claims is five times the shock that any standard tube can take.

Combinations of frequency and element diameter available for the SLP series include 12 metric sizes with element diameters of 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 mm for emission frequencies of 1.25, 2.25, 5 or 10 MHz, also 11 imperial sizes for the same frequencies with element diameters of 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1 in. Similar combinations exist for SLF, SLH and SLM, but only 10 metric and 7 imperial sizes are available.

The 146 mm long, 19 mm diameter tube produces a minimum beam power output of 0.5 mW. Beam diameter is 0.49 mm and full angle divergence is 1.64 mrad. Polarization is random. Optical and mechanical parameters of the laser give a low beam noise (30 Hz to 10 MHz 0.50% RMS) and long-term stability (drift +5%). Permanent factory alignment eliminates need for field adjustment, says the company, even after rough handling or large temperature variations.

These transducers have side-entry Subvis or Microdot connectors, but the larger SLF, SLH and SLM sizes have BNC or Lemo 1 side-entry con Rectors.
