T h e Society of Thoracic Surgeons The first annual meeting of T h e Society of Thoracic Surgeons was held in St. Louis, January 25-27, 1965. Attendance was greater than expected. The program, most of which will appear in future issues of T h e Annuls, beginning with the May issue, was well received. T h e members voted in favor of a resolution to support an educational campaign relative to the hazards of smoking. Copies of this resolution are to be sent to the House of Delegates of the American Medical Association and to the Surgeon General of the United States Public Health Service. The Council has designated the following sites and dates of future meetings: 1966, Denver, Jan. 24-26, Denver Hilton Hotel; 1967, Kansas City, Jan. 23-25, Hotel Muehlbach; 1968, New Orleans, Jan. 22-24, T h e members are reminded that the Founding Group closes July 1, 1965. If a member wishes to propose a prospective member for this group, he should contact the Secretary promptly.

Southern Thoracic Surgical Association T h e eleventh annual meeting of the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association was held in Atlanta on November 12-14, 1964, under the presidency of Dr. Robert G. Ellison. 226

T h e chairman of the Committee on Local Arrangements was Dr. William A. Hopkins; the chairman of the Program Committee was Dr. James W. Pate. There were 175 physicians in attendance, not including residents and interns from various hospitals in the Atlanta area. At the annual business session the revised constitution and bylaws were approved by the membership and became effective immediately. Copies will be sent to all members. It was also decided that T h e Annuls of Thoracic Surgery would be the official journal of the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association and that all papers to be presented at the annual meeting should be submitted to the Editor for consideration. Annual dues of $25.00 include a subscription to T h e Annuls. T h e following were elected to membership: Maurice Adam, Dallas, Tex.; Martin Bergmann, St. Louis, Mo.; Robert Crouch, Asheville, N.C.; Kenneth Cruze, Takoma Park, Md.; Paul Ellis, Jr., Dallas, Tex.; Walter G. Cole, Memphis, Tenn., was elected president for the coming year, and Dr. W. W. Buckingham, Kansas City, Mo., was elected vice-president. Council members are Dr. Robert G. Ellison, chairman, and Drs. Francis H. Cole, Milton V. Davis, Edward R. Munnell, and Hawley H. Seiler. T h e Membership Committee consists of Dr. Milton V. Davis, chairman, and Drs. James I,. Alexander and Nelson H. Kraeft. Candidates for membership must apply not later than September 1, 1965, on forms provided by the Association. Each application should be accompanied by two sponsoring letters from members of the Association. Application form and letters should be sent to Dr. Davis, 3707 Gaston Ave., Dallas, Tex. T h e Program Committee will be headed by Dr. Edward R. Munnell with Drs. Dennis M. Rosenberg and Sam E. Stephenson, Jr., as members. T h e deadline for submission of abstracts is June 1. It is urged that all members wishing to participate in the scientific session at the 1965 meeting immediately prepare abstracts in triplicate and forward them to Dr. Munnell, T h e Oklahoma City Clinic, 301 N.W. 12th St., Oklahoma City, Okla.
