77o SH'±'~ENFELD, NS EXperimental investigations of the effect of frost heaving on shallow, low-loaded foundations. 4F,IT,4R. SOIL MECH.FOUNDATION ENGNG.VlI,N3,NoV.1974,P156_I60. Three groups of foundations were defined - first, foundations for metal blocks with electrical equipment, second, for transformers and third, foundations for unitized busber and swltchgear structures. Each group is chsrac. terized by its own design features relating to behaviour under heaving soil. Vertical displacements of the foundations and free ground surface, depth of freezing and change of moisture content were observed at two outdoor sites under heaving conditions. The results are described in this paper. 771 BIELAK, J Dynamic behaviour of structures with embedded foundations. 7F,2T,15R. INT .J.EARTHQ. ~GNG. STRUCT. DYNAM. V 3 ,N3 ,JAN-MAR. 1975,P259-274. A study of the dynamics of building-soil interaction is presented that includes embedding of the foundation and material damping.

772 VALEEV,RK TULCHINSKII, MD EValuation of the effectiveness of using bored situcast pile foundations for the production buildings of the Kanm Automobile Plant.4T,hR. SOIL MECH.FOUNDATION ENGNG,Vll,N3,NOV.1974,P161.165. Bored situ-cast piles of various designs were used on an unprecedented scale in the construction of the Kama Automobile Plant. This paper presents an economic evaluation of the effectiveness of using pile foundations.

773 FEDOROV,BS Root-type piles. 4F. SOIL MECH.FOUNDATION ENGNG,Vll, NB,NOV.1974,P166-169. The paper describes the uses and methods of installation of root-type piles. These piles are cast-in-situ piles made by drilling boreholes and then filling them with sandcement solution. The foundation consists of bundles of piles diverging at various angles, hence the name roottype piles. 774 PUSKOV, V I Thermal effect of buildings on the tangential forces of frost heaving of foundations. 3F,2T,11R. SOIL MECH.FOUNDATION ENGNG,Vll,N3,NOV.1974,P180_183. This paper discusses the importance of the temperature distribution in the layer of frozen soil in the zone of thermal influence of a structure, especiall~ when tangential forces of frost heaving are considered.

775 MOROZOV, VD SUSENKOV ,ES Redistribution of stresses and strains in foundation beds of buildings and other structures during construc~ tion on mountain slopes. 6F,3B. SoIL MECH.FOUNDATION ENGNG,VII, N3,NOV.1974,PISh.187. The paper presents a study of the stress distribution in the slope mass and under the building site, which served as the foundation bed for buildings and other industrial structures. 776 STOLYARoV, VG Design of minimum-volume foundations. 2F,1T,4R. SOIL MECH.FOUNDATION ~GNG,Vll,N3,NOV.1974,P192.196. The main ways of determining the dimensions of the lower surface of a foundation are outlined in the light of how

the adopted dimensions of the lower surface affect the volume of the foundation. Ecc~atrically loaded symmetric foundations, stepped (monolithic), and precast, with a trapezoidal part in section are all considered. 777 TREGUB,AS GUPALE~,VI Performance of cast-ln-place bored piles in the type 2 settling ground in Zaporozhe.3R. 781 YAMANOUCHI, Y KYUSHU UNIV .FUKUOKA,J MURARA, H KIAGOSH IMA TELq{.COLL. J Brittle failure of a volcanlc ash soil-Shirssu. Conference. Sessi(m one. 12F,IT,6R. PROC.EIGHTH INT.CONF.ON SOIL MECH.FOUND.ENGNG,MOS. COW, 197k,Vl. 2,1974, P495- 500. "Shirasu" is a typically structurally unstable soll of volcanic origin, widely distributed in Japan and the cause of frequent damage involving slope failures. Uniaxial and triaxial strength tests and Brazilian splitting tests were conducted to investigate the failure criteria for undusturbed Shirasu. It was found that the modified Oriffith criterion and the Coulomb criterion are applicable. The results from these investigations are used to explain some examples of failure in cut-off slopes.

Earth retaining structures 782 HANNA,TH KURDI, II Studies on anchored flexible walls in sand. 16F,2T,18R. J. GEOTECH. ENGNG DIV .ASCE,VIO0, N.GTI0, OCT .1974, Pi107.1122. From an experimental investigation of the behavlour of laboratory scale flexible retaining walls in sand, supported by up to three levels of ~nchors, it is concluded that the behavlour of a tied-back wall is influenced by the wall flexibility, the anchor inclinations and the initial design assumption.
