0.1. Aven, E.G. Coffman, Jr. and Y.A. Kogan: Stochastic Analysis of Computer Storage. Reidel, Dordrecht, Netherlands, 1987, 254 pages, US Mathematics and Its Applications, $89.00/Dfl. 185.00/&63.00, ISBN 90-277-2515-2. This book is the only text dealing broadly with the analysis of computer storage systems. Within the field of mathematical modeling and performance evaluation of computer systems, existing texts focus on applications of queueing theory to general computer design and scheduling problems, with a relatively minor emphasis on storage problems. Storage systems in computers continue to be a scarce resource, and modern applications of large data base systems apply a constant pressure to the frontiers of storage technology. Thus, it is appropriate that there be a text such as this one, devoted solely to the techniques for analyzing computer storage systems. The current state of knowledge is presented, bringing together important aspects of research from the East and the West. This book is intended for researchers and advanced students with an interest in the latest mathematical tools available for the study of computer storage systems. Contents: 1. Background and Overview; 2. Buffer Storage; 3. Primary Computer Storage; 4. Paged Two-Level Memories: Theory and Analysis of Algorithms; 5. Paged Two-Level Memories: Approximate Models and Efficient Computations; 6. Secondary Storage. The bibliography is extensive. (WFA) B. Bollobas (Ed.): Littlewood’s Miscellany. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1986, 200 pages, US $11.95, ISBN 0-521-33058-O. This is a reprint of the well known (and out-of-print for a long time) book by J.E. Littlewood who wrote so many papers with G.H. Hardy. This book contains in addition a biography of Littlewood by Bollobas but also some other texts published by Littlewood. It is a very attractive book describing the work, ideas, reminiscences of a famous mathematician. I advise everyone to read it. (CB) A. Bultheel: Laurent Series and their PadP Approximations. Birkhauser, Basel, 1987, xi + 274 pages, SFr. 88.00, ISBN 3-7643-1940-2. The classical PadC approximation problem is now well known: it consists in approximating a function given by its Taylor expansion around zero by a rational function whose expansion * Books for review should be sent to Professor W.F. Ames (subjects: modeling, partial differential equations, differential equations, applied mathematics) or Professor C. Brezinski (subjects: interpolation, quadrature, approximation theory, linear algebra, history and philosophy of mathematics). The postal addresses are given on the inside front cover.
