2464 WAHI~OM, E UNIV. COLORADO, BOULD~R, USA Dams, dam foundations and reservoir sites. Textbook. Developments in geotechrdcal engineering. Vol. 6. Figs,Tabls,Ref s. ELSEVIER SCI.PUBL.CO.V6,1974, 278P. This book has been written with the conviction that safe construction of new dams ard reservoirs and constant monitoring of existing facilities are Joint responsibilities of engineers and geoscientists. The aspects of foundations that should be investigated and analyzed during periods of planning, construction and post-construction surveillance of dams and reservoirs are stressed. The contents are: Chapter i. About dams and reservoirs; 2. Rocks and unconsolidated deposits: c~igin, composition, and properties; 3. Excavation and filling of valleys; 4. Valleys in anisctropic rocks; 5. Groundwater hydrology of tu~formly permeable media; 6. Groundwater hydrolog), of anisotropic media; 7. Geology and groundwater hydrology of soluble rocks; 8. Mechanics of dam foundations; 9. Geological and geo!dlysical investigations of dam and reservoir sites; lO. Geotechnlcal aspects of dam and reservoir construction. Index.

z~58 FLEMING, WG THORBURN, S Raking of piles and lateral loading of piles. Informal discussion. PROC. INST. CIV. ENQRS. PART 1,V56, FEB, 1974, P125-126. Dr.Flemir~ opened this discussion with a description of the uses of raked piles amd their design and installation. Mr.Thorburn then discussed the subject of horizontal piles subject to lateral loads, and presented results of tests on pile groups driven 30ft into sand, by the US army. He also discussed instrt~entation of test piles.
