Under t h e asst~ption that t h e sea bed is an isotropic p~ro-elastic half-s~ace safe,rated with water, the d ~ e s of the two lmhases are governed by Blot's equations. To circumvent the difficulties of solving the coupled equations an al~l~r~ximate scheme is applied to achieve an analytic solution. The problem can first be reduced to a series of classical elastostatic l~oblsms which can be solved by complex variables, a~i then ccrrecte~ for seepage near the mudline. Dynamic analyses were performed to determine the susceptibility to failure by earthquake-induced liquefaction of the umd~lylng silt-clay of the dam. A factar of safety against the occtm'renoe of liquefaction failure was determined by comparing the dymamic resistance obtained from cyclic triaxial tests on tu~iisturbed SSml~.es with t h e time histm~y ~f dymamic s t r e s s e s caused by the design earthquakes. Prelimimary amaS s e s revealed thnt t h e silt-clsy beneath the upstream shell ~ o u l d be removed, and partial removal of the silt-clay from the d o w r ~ e a m shell was recc~mer~ed as a l~ecautlon against the unlikely event of liquefaction failure there.

Hydrators were tested in inclined, thin coal seams Im~one to outbursts. A coal pamel was divided into a n u ~ e r of small pamels by drilling large diameter bor~holes to the raise of the seam, and hydr~monitors with cutting depth r a r e s of 0.2-0.5m were then inserted into the boreholes. P229-239 An Apple II Plus microcomputer with high resolution graphics is used to simulate stress wave energy transfer to rock in percussive drilling. The drilling model is based on one-dimensional stress wave theo~y for the rod ar~ bit, and on a nonlinear history-dependent force/penet~atlon relationship for the bit/rock interaction. Input data are given for rod, bit, inoident wave and bit/rock interaction. The use of the simulation ~ o g r a m 'Bit' is illustrated by studying the influence of bit mass and shape on drill-bit efficiency. For the bits chosen mass is shown to be a far more important parameter than shape.
