Voice control A voice-operated CAD system is being launched by Calma. The voice-control unit can respond to over 50 operator commands and allows users to pan, zoom, and look at multiple views and composite images without using a keyboard or lightpen. The unit, which is supplied with a headset and lightweight microphone, can be trained in any language. The unit is an option for the GDSII IC design system. Dynamic design British Aerospace Dynamics have completed a £1 million programme to re-equip and refurbish their environmental engineering laboratory. For vibration testing the laboratory now has a range of hydraulic and electrical vibrators capable of generating thrusts of 175-79 O00N up to a frequency of 5kHz. Controllers can provide sine, random and shock tests with report quality graphics output. These supplement the existing climatic test chambers. Modal analysis is carried out on a GenRad TDA with SDRC software MODAL PLUS, SABBA, FATIGUE and 2780 EMULATOR to communicate with the company IBM 3033 and its NA STRA N finite-element package. The laboratory has been approved by the UK Civil A v/at/on Authority and the Ministry of Defence (DEF STAN 05-32) to test a range o f equipment from electromechanical units to electronic systems. It is already used about 40 per cent of the time by other industrial organizations and defence contractors in the steel, marine, chemical mining, automobile and computer industries but is looking to increase its commercial activities.
