Kola MMC put into operation the first in Russia industrial production of commodity cobalt Kola Mining and Metallurgical Company (subsidiary of MMC Norilsk Nickel) has produced the first electrolytic cobalt as part of in the implementation of strategic cobalt production investment project. Thus, Kola MMC commissioned the only Russian industrial production of high-grade electrolytic cobalt, high-quality and globally competitive product. According to estimates, capital investment (and investments in the project amounting to more than Roubles 2 bn) should pay off within the short term due to additional profits earned by reducing operating costs and adding value to marketable products, which can be used in the open sector (batteries, catalysts, magnets, etc) and in aerospace and defence industry.

the unit, which has a capacity of 2700 barrels/ stream day of alkylate production, was on 18 Aug 2015. Albemarle's AlkyStar catalyst, together with CB&I's novel reactor scheme, produces high-quality alkylate product without the use of liquid acid catalysts in the alkylate manufacturing process. Not only is AlkyClean technology inherently safer when compared to technologies employing liquid acids, there are also environmental benefits due to the reduction of waste streams such as spent acids and acid-soluble oils. Albemarle's AlkyStar catalyst, for use exclusively with the AlkyClean alkylation process, is based on an advanced new zeolite concept developed by Albemarle's R&D and is optimized to further improve the economics of the AlkyClean technology.

Green Biologics to open first biobutanol unit in US Green Biologics has announced that it has begun construction of an n-butanol and acetone unit which uses 100% biosourced materials at Little Falls, MN. This is being installed on an existing site, known under the name Central MN Ethanol Cooperative, which was acquired by Green Biologics and renamed Central MN Renewables. The facility will use technology developed by Green Biologics which combines a fermentation process using Clostridium with chemical catalysis. Production is scheduled to begin in 2016. Green Biologics has raised $76 M which is made up of $42 M from a funding round led by Swire Pacific Limited and Sofinnova Partners and $34 M from debt financing led by Tennenbaum Capital Partners.

LUXI selects Honeywell’s technology to produce ethylene and propylene from coal Honeywell announced that LUXI Chemical Group Co Ltd has selected its process technology and automation controls to convert coal to key ingredients used to make plastics. LUXI will use Honeywell UOP's advanced methanol-to-olefins (MTO) process to convert methanol derived from gasified coal into 293,000 tonnes/y of ethylene and propylene at its facility in Liaocheng, Shandong Province, China. The operations will be managed by a suite of automation and control technologies from Honeywell Process Solutions (HPS). Honeywell UOP's advanced MTO process combines the UOP/Hydro MTO process and the Total/UOP olefin cracking process to significantly increase yields and feedstock efficiency. The process converts methanol from coal and natural gas into ethylene and propylene. At the heart of the technology are UOP's proprietary catalysts, which make it possible to efficiently adjust the ratio of propylene and ethylene produced, so operators can most effectively meet demand for those products. In addition, the advanced MTO process offers the lowest operating cost, quick and efficient start-up, and operational reliability.
