Novel production technology for sustainable methyl methacrylate Mitsubishi Rayon in collaboration with a subsidiary of Lucite International, has developed alternative sustainable feedstock sources for the manufacture of methyl methacrylate, utilizing existing technologies and also by developing new bio-based routes for methacrylate monomers. The companies plan to commercialize the use of sustainable feedstock for methyl methacrylate manufacture by 2016. Plans are also on the anvil for achieving 50% of methyl methacrylate manufacture from these sustainable sources. The use of the existing technologies from renewable feedstock and new bio-based routes for sustainable manufacture directly from renewable sources will have a low carbon footprint and will help reduce dependence on fossil based raw materials. Additionally, the companies plan to pursue innovation in catalysis and process technologies to decrease resources utilized per unit of output in all their activities.
