Supplementary information in published manuscripts

As consumers of the scientific literature you may be aware of the increasing concern among journal editors about the rising volume of supplementary information that now rather routinely accompanies published manuscripts. Among other problems, this situation is raising serious questions as to whether or not this voluminous information is ever read by most (if any) casual readers—or even by manuscript reviewers. Some journals (SCIENCE is a notable example that I am aware of) are struggling with creative solutions to this problem.
