Classical concurrent procedural languages such as AL and AUTOPASS were developed as robot languages but, saysthe author, have never been fully implemented because of their complexity. This, the authors continue, suggests that attempting to constrain robotics software in a disciplined and uniform framework is premature. The authors explain in the paper how it is more convenient to build different software modules, one for each activity such as sensory feedback, modelling etc, possibly coded in different languages, and allow them to communicate through message exchange.

This is an inflexible approach and the authors urge the development of powerful programming systems for industrial robots. Conventional robot programming languages are low level. The authors present some basic principles that they say may be useful for constructing practical high-level robot software.
