Swedish bank buys Thales server for PKI Sarah Hilley

Bank Giro Centrale, (BGC) which operates the largest payment clearing system in Sweden, has implemented Thales Authentication server. The bank uses the Safesign server to authenticate corporate customers who submit payment instructions. The server also records proof of transaction. Bank Giro Centrale uses the server as part of the Swedish BankID Infrastructure. "The key benefit to BGC of using the server is it allows the bank to handle authenticated identities from different PKI systems, said John Skippers, Solutions Business Manager, Thales Security.

"This means BGC can support all possible PKI certificates, which their users may want to use.” As a result the bank can recognise both certificates from the Swedish BankID network and commercial certificates from other PKI systems. The BankID network, which services half of all Swedish banks, provides bank infrastructure for electronic identification over the Internet.

It was set up to help Swedish banks cooperate to ensure strong authentication for Internet banking. Recently Thales announced that their Authentication server has been certified for use within the BankID network. “Safesign is the first accredited BankID authentication server to support multiple identification technology outside the BankID network,” said Skippers. The Swedish BankID network is very similar to the UK PKI infrastructure, BACSTEL-IP, explained Skippers. The Thales authentication server is already deployed in the BACSTEL-IP system, which is a PKI framework allowing UK customers to make payments using digital signatures and smartcards. "PKI is now coming out of the doldrums of uncertainty of its growth,” said Skippers. “We’ve seen significant growth in the last 12 months.”
