Hormones and the brain The brain is a challenge to the endocrinologist because it influences several hormonal systems such as the somatotrophic axis, which in turn influences brain functions like sleep. The brain is both a target for peripheral hormones and an autoregulatory endocrine/ paracrine organ. For example, there is a neural so-
matotrophic axis that is markedly affected by neurological disease, and both exogenous estrogens and neural production of estrogens are important to brain development and function.
