Symposium session II

Hormones and the brain The brain is a challenge to the endocrinologist because it influences several hormonal systems such as the somatotrophic axis, which in turn influences brain functions like sleep. The brain is both a target for peripheral hormones and an autoregulatory endocrine/ paracrine organ. For example, there is a neural so-

matotrophic axis that is markedly affected by neurological disease, and both exogenous estrogens and neural production of estrogens are important to brain development and function. The speakers in this symposium examined these issues in particular detail. P.D.
