check financial communications using the Data Encryption Standard (DES) algorithm. The necessary key management is accomplished with a combination of DES and RSA, the public key cryptography method of Rivest, Shamir and Adleman. The system allows companies to transmit fully authenticated nonrepetitive electronic funds transfers from their own offices, using
a typical cash-management or personal-computer terminal. The service will provide companies with greater flexibility in EFT in any currency to any beneficiary worldwide and will ensure end-toend security of messages transmitted. Telephone and transaction terminal A multifeature telephone and transaction terminal, which permits rapid and discrete credit verification at point of sale, has been announced by Ferranti GTE. Encoded information on the credit or cheque guarantee card is deciphered by a magnetic strip reader before the terminal, known as the Datea 2000, automatically communicates with the host computer of the card-issuing company. This communication takes place over ordinary telephone lines or the
British Telecom Packet Switch Stream network (PSS) to give current information on the card. Designed to cope with future developments, Datea 2000 may be fitted with a pin pad and hard copy printer - - in which mode the instrument is being used in an electronic funds transfer scheme in Belgium with two major banking organizations. Videotex loan approval service The promise of 'instant credit' has taken on new meaning in France. Intelmatique, the marketing agency for French telecommunications products, has announced that the latest professional application for France's national videotex system, Teletel, is a 24 h, online, credit checkingand loan approval service. Using a Minitel (the standalone videotex terminal), retailers can now check an applicant's credit rating, calculate monthly payments, principal and interest, and issue a loan contract in less than five minutes. The service has been installed at more than 2 300 retail shops throughout France by a company known as Cetelem, a subsidiary of the Compagnie Bancaire Group. The heart of the system is Cetelem's prime 750 minicomputers, which are accessed by the
Minitels via Primenet and Transpac, the national packet switching network. Cetelem also has proprietary 'credit scoring' software, which rates applicants and checks them against its risk file, a type of credit blacklist. An applicant's credit information is sent through the Minitel to the Cetelem videotex centre. Based on the customer's outstanding debt, income and other responsibilities, a financing plan, which includes credit rates and monthly payments, is offered to the customer. If accepted, the customer's credit rating is assessed and, if approved, the printer attached to the Mintel issues the credit contract at the agreed terms.
