TGSG: The Transport Geography Study Group of the Institute of British Geographers 1993 has been one of the busiest and most successful years in the 20-year history of the TGSG. The highlight of the year was undoubtedly the publication and launch in Atlanta, USA, of the Journal of Transport Geography. This issue (No. 4) marks the completion of the first annual cycle of the journal. It is an appropriate time, therefore, for the TGSG to thank Richard Knowles, the editor, for all his hard work in establishing the journal and to congratulate him on the quality and variety of the contents. Other highlights of 1993 included the conference sessions in January and April. The first on ‘Air transport and airport planning’ attracted media interest from the quality (broadsheet) press in Britain and Brian Graham’s paper has already been published in the Journal of Transport Geography. The papers presented at the April
conference on the Channel Tunnel will appear after revision as a book during 1994 entitled ‘The geography of the Channel Tunnel’ edited by Richard Gibb and published by Belhaven Press. Looking forward to 1994, the TGSG year will start in January at the of British Geographers’ Institute annual conference in Nottingham where John Farrington is convening the group’s session on ‘Transport and the Environment’. The year will also see the furthering of links with European counterparts, an appropriate development in view of the opening of the Channel Tunnel in May 1994. ‘City Port Development and Regional Change’ will be the theme of the second British-Italian Seminar to be held in Venice in March. Adalberto Vallega (Genoa) to organize a two-day meeting which will examine the relationship between port cities and the management of coastal zones. Later in the year it is hoped that a number of British Geographers will travel to Poland for the first BritishPolish Seminar. Derek Hall, who has done much to enhance the awareness of Eastern European transport issues within the TGSG, is co-convening the seminar. Currently the possibility of a two-centre location (Gdansk and Warsaw) is being discussed with Zofia Sawiczewska, which will enable experience TGSG members to Poland’s transport system at first hand. In parallel with these developments, Jacques Charlier (Louvain-la Neuvc, Belgium), the group’s corresponding Western European member, is planning a meeting of the Committee

for European Transport Geography to coincide with the opening of the Channel Tunnel. Details of the mecting have yet to bc finalized but paper sessions will concentrate on two themes: the growth in traffic bctwccn the UK and continental Europe and the development of the European high-speed train network. It is also
hoped to include a field excursion across the Channel aimed at comparing Eurotunnel and ferry services. Overall, 1994 promises to be an exciting year for the TGSG. The full calendar of meetings is outlined on p, 283 and further information on any of the confcrencc sessions is available from the named contact. The TGSG
