The most demanding recommendations of the United Nations Environm e n t Programme as well as of different international institutions concerned, have emphasized the fundmental importance of a rational management of Hazardous Waste as one of the basis of a real politics to protect the human societies and their environment. In this respect, the International Association of Medicine & Biology of the Environment (IAMBE) with the Hungarian National Committee established for the World Conference, together with the active assistance and cooperation of the United Nations environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the World Bank, as well as other intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, in particular

the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA), have planned the World Conference on Hazardous Waste, to be held in Budapest (Hungary), on October 5--10, 1987. This Conference is specially devoted to give the opportunity to delegates from Western and Eastern industrialized and developing countries, to present their specific point of view in order to discuss the state of the art of this important question and to propose recommendations reflecting the real wishes of the participants belonging to different nations, whatever their way of growth could be. The active participation of professional scientists and specialists (technicians, economists, engineers, sanitary officers, medical doctors, biologists, toxicologists, jurists, insurance specialists, for example) with the presence of scientific and professional societies or institutions (particularly Academies of Sciences and/or Engineering), the representatives of governmental bodies and commercial firms, will provide the possibility of dealing widely with the different aspects of the problems concerning hazardous waste. Moreover appropriate propositions will be worked out to implement the follow-up of the recommendations proposed by the participants to the Conference. Two awards will be granted, one for research and the other one for new technologists.
