Dear Colleague: On behalf of the organizing committee of the Japanese Heart Failure Society, we welcome you to the 3rd Annual Scientific Meeting in Fukuoka on October 7 to 9, 1999. Heart failure is a growing public health problem worldwide and has an enormous impact on the prognosis and lifestyles of patients. In recent years impressive strides have been made in understanding the pathophysiology of heart failure at all levels, from molecular changes to the integrated circulatory system. Furthermore, the modalities available for treatment of heart failure have expanded impressively. However, the prognosis of patients with severe heart failure is still grave despite these advancements. It is obvious that we need to put much more efforts to overcome this serious problem of heart failure. It is also obvious that only the cohesive and interacting efforts among Various disciplines may promise a progress. The Heart Failure Society was fou0ded to strengthen our bonds and to renew our enthusiasm and commitment to research on heart failure. The program of the 3rd Annual Scientific Meeting includes the presentations of about 200 original research and of a state-of-the-art review on various issues related to heart failure, which will be given by leading physicians and scientists from abroad and Japan. I hope that you will enjoy the 3rd Annual Meeting of Japanese Heart Failure Society.
