The 46th meeting of the Canadian Association of Pediatric Surgeons (CAPS) was held in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, from September 18 to 20, 2014. Montreal was the perfect mix of “Old World Charm” infused with North American energy and provided a fantastic focal point for the meeting. The local host was Dr. Sherif Emil, and both he and Arlene Ein worked tirelessly to ensure that the scientific program and entertainment ran smoothly. As a result, all aspects of the meeting were thoroughly enjoyable and educational. Dr. Sarah Bouchard, in her final year as Chair of the Program Committee, along with the help of her committee members rigorously developed a high quality scientific program consisting of 68 presentations (oral and poster). On behalf of CAPS we would like to thank Dr. Bouchard for all her hard work and commitment over the last 5 years. Prior to the start of CAPS it is important to mention that the 10th annual meeting of the Canadian Pediatric Surgical Nurses Interest Group (CaPSNIG) took place. This is a group that has grown and flourished over the past few years, contributing a number of podium presentations at the CAPS meeting. As we all perused the first few pages of the CAPS 2014 program we were reminded of the great lives and contributions of Dr. Richard Kennedy (founding member of CAPS) and Dr. Alain Ouimet (1947–2013). President of CAPS Dr. Jacob Langer opened the meeting with his welcoming address and well wishes to Dr. Pramod Puliganda (previous Chair of the CAPS Publication Committee) who had recently been taken ill and was awaiting surgery. The afternoon then proceeded with oral presentations, a historical update by Frank Guttman, and ended with an update on CAPSNet. These presentations were all well

attended as was the Welcoming reception that followed! This was a lively event with good music, food, and excellent conversation. Friday, as always, was a full day of oral and poster presentations. CaPSNIG celebrated their last 10 years with an address outlining their maturation and success. Dr. Alana Beres, the CAPS Traveling Fellow, gave a very inspiring talk about her time in Kenya. The presidential address by Dr. Langer was a mixture of the success of the past, present, and the future of CAPS. The 2 minute, 2 slide session was received with the usual enthusiasm, and the creativity of the use of 2 slides was once again admired — an example of technology that we should all use as encouraged by Dr. Langer in his Presidential address. The day ended with a difficult topic — Ethics. Dr. Bouchard presented a number of ethical surgical dilemmas and along with guests Mr David Platts (lawyer) and Dr. F. Carnevale (a clinical ethicist), the cases were discussed in detail. Is there a right answer? It is always so difficult, but we are extremely grateful to our guests for their valuable contributions to our learning. The final day started with poster podium presentations followed by an exciting address by Dr. Ronald B. Hirschl, JPS Fred MacLeod Lecture, “The Making of a Surgeon: 10,000 hours”. Continuing in the vein of education and with the fast approaching need to understand the competency based education of trainees, CAPS held the Educational Symposium on “A Competency Based Education Model for Pediatric Surgery”. Dr. Langer, finishing his 3 year term as CAPS president, brought the meeting to a formal close and introduced Dr. Peter Fitzgerald as the incoming CAPS president. The Presidential dinner was a fantastic affair with a predinner performance by the very athletic “Flagman” followed by fine food, music by the Montreal Jazz Band, and of course the company of friends and colleagues. During the course of the banquet the best podium and poster presentations were awarded. Certainly, as the scientific training and rigor of research by our trainee increases the quality of presented research has improved and with it becomes the more difficult task of judging the presenters. Congratulations should go to all trainees who presented at the conference, but in the end there are always winners!
