Introduction

T h e A s s oci ati on pour la R e c h e r c h e sur le C a n c e r and basic r e s e a r c h

ARC public utility status was granted in 1966. And today, with its 2 900 000 members, ARC is the main French association for cancer research. Since 1980, it has invested more than one billion francs in this field. ARC national and regional scientific committees, composed of the most eminent clinicians and basic researchers, have selected about 1000 new research programs and contributed to the training of nearly 800 young researchers, thus developing throughout France a large research network of the most active teams. As a result of this policy, french cancer research is now one of the foremost in the field, both on an european and an international scale. ARC has been supporting the basic research for years, and is fully aware of the essential part it plays in the fight against cancer. A preliminary evaluation of the results was necessary, to assess the present state of ARC and basic research. The meeting held in Villejuif on 4th and 5th December 1987 achieved this aim and aroused great interest within the scientific community. The latest outstanding results in the fields of molecular genetics, oncogenes, immunology, hormone receptors, anti-tumor agents, differentiation processes were presented during four sessions presided over by Pr. Nicole Le Douarin, Pr. Pierre Chambon, Dr. Bernard Malissen and Pr. Dominique Stehelin. The main presentations of this meeting, published in this special issue of 'Biochimie', bear witness to the success of an association that is devoted to the development of research.
