Concentrations of dissolved total adenytates ( A M P + A D P + A T P ) were measured (2.8_+ 1.7 nmol/L); compartments and fluxes revolved in adenylate cycling were estimated, including eel] numbers, biomass, and uptake rates for m-situ microbial populations. Concentrations of dissolved free glucose in 5 different aquatic biotopes ranged 4.99-9.63 /~g C/L determined chemically; determined microbiologically as Kt+ S,, they ranged 0.62-2.72 /~g C/L. The discrepancy was not due to methodological error. but was attributed to differences in availability of truly free, absorbed, or complexed dissolved free glucose, or to different specific labelling of these different glucose fractions.
