In J u l y the H e a l t h C o m m i t t e e o.f the H a l i f a x C o r p o r a t i o n r e c o m m e n d e d the T o w n Council to advertise the post of Medical Officer of H e a l t h , at a s a t a r y of d I , o o o per annum. E v e n this inadequate s a l a r y was opposed, a n d an a m e n d m e n t was m o v e d a n d carried, substituting d 8 o o as the salary, at which figure the position was duly advertised. T h e m a j o r i t y of the T o w n Council are a p p a r e n t l y unaware that such a salary is c o n s i d e r a b l y below t h a t p a i d to assistants on the staff of m a n y local authorities, a n d that if they are to secure well qualified a n d experienced officers they will h a v e to pa.y a d e q u a t e salaries. T h e r e were said to be fourteen a p p l i c a n t s for the p o s t at ~28oo, but at the A u g u s t meeting of the Council it was decided to reopen the question a n d to o f f e r ' a n increased s a l a r y of ~9oo. T h e H a l i f a x T o w n Council m a y rest assured that skilled medical services are not in the m a r ket a t this p a l t r y figure, a n d possibly the obvious i m p r o v e m e n t in the s t a n d a r d of the applications p r o d u c e d b y increasing the salary will convince some of the councillors t h a t it would h a v e been in the best interests o f the town for the Council to h a v e offered an obviously adequate s a l a r y for such a responsible a n d i m p o r t a n t position.
THE
NEECH
PRIZE.
The Council of the Society of Medical Officers of Health recently accepted a generous offer from Dr. J. T. Neeeh, to endow a prize for the best paper read at a branch meeting of the Society in each year. The deed of settlement has now been completed, and Dr. Neech has transferred to the trustees of the Society a holding in g-5 per cent.

The prize shall be called the Neech prize.
2. It shall be awarded annually for the best paper contributed to the Branch Meetings of the Society in the United Kingdom during the y e a r - the year being Medical Officers of Health Society's year, i.e., October to September. 3. No such paper shall be eligible for award unless two typewritten copies are formally sent to the Executive Secretary of the Society. 4. The amount or value of the prize shall be the annual interest arising from the investments for the time being and if in any one year no prize shall be awarded the amount shall be added to the next year. 5. The paper must have reference to Public Health subjects, and originaiity and research shall be taken into consideration. No consideration of seniority of membership or professional standing shall influence the award of the prize which shall be open to all members of the Society. 6. The assessors shall be the president and editor of the Society for the time being, with two members of the Council--the latter to be elected annually by the Council at the first Council Meeting of the year. Dr. James Thomas Neech shall be entitled to nominate a fifth assessor if and when he thinks fit. 7.
The decision of the assessors shall be final.
8. It shall be within the power of the assessors to delegate one or more of their number the duty of perusing.and making a list of the papers from which shall finally be selected the winner of the prize, such selection being made at a full meeting o f the assessors. 9, The award shall be made known within a period of three months of the close of the Society's year. 10. The successful paper shall be offered for publication to the International Jourt~al of Public Health or such other representative journal as may be decided by the Council from time to time and such Journal shall have free right of publishing the paper.
