THE HUANG-YOU STAR OF THE SONG DYNASTY - A CHINESE STAR LIST OF THE EARLY ~D~EQA~
PERIOD
Received IVSO August 25 ~ST~C~ Rmmrds of observations of stars (including the date~i~atives of the 28 lunar mansions) have been collected and re-edited from five previous editions. After further consulting the star chart of XYXFY* and the Suzhou planispbere, we obtain the definitive positions of 360 stars which we can convert into the right ascensions and declinations for 1052 A,D,, and hence their identification. Of the traditional 282 asterisms comprising 1464 stars, this list has 282 asterisms comprising 1457 stars, lacking only the star Shaocheng on the left WalZ of the Purple Enclosure and the 6 stars of the asterism Ligong. With positions based on actual observations, this fist embodies the traditional Chinese star system. It is the second listing after the "Star List of Master Shi" of the Warring Period, and provides an important and reliable reference for historical.researches. 1, For researches on Chinese historical astronomy, with its rich records of heavenly phenomena, anceint star lists and star charts are indispensable tools. A small error here may mean very different results and may even lead one into completely wrong tracks. Over the last hundred years or so, experts inside China and abroad have generally used the following three lists of Chinese-Westernstar concordances: Schlegel's ~'~ranogr~phi~ Chin&e", CHANG Fu-yuan's %hong-Xi Duizhao Hengxingbiao" and Tsutsihashi and Chevalier's "Catalogue d'Etoiles observees a Pekin sous l'empereur K'ien-Long", Published in the Annales de 1'0bservatoireAstroaomique de Zo-Se, &(1914). In 1936, Yabuuchi lt/ wrote hie paper "The Asterisms of the Song Dynasty",based on observations made in the reign Buang-You as given in three texts, WXTK*, LTMY and GKJY. Checking against Tsutsihashi's table based on YXKC, Yabuuchi adopted 273 (actually 272, allowing for one duplication) of Tsutsihashi's identifications, used 74 different ones, and added further 37, making a total of 309 stars, in addition to the 2% lunar mansion determinatives.Because the majority were eventually based on YXKC {a not very reliable source as we shall point out below) and because an over-generous tolerance of 4 degrees was used, it is inevitable that many errors have crept into Yabuucbi's list. Kogawa /2/, using about one thousand Chinese, Korean and Japanese records of lunar occultations and planetary approaches over some 14 centuries from the Jin to the Ming Dynasty, identified the Western equivalents of 48 zodaical asterisms. Of these, only 11 show complete agreement with YXKC, Hence Xogawa believes that concordancesbased on YXKC are unreliable for the fatter does not represent the Chinese tradition fully. Kogawa's work is thoughtprovoking, but has generally been overlooked. For example, in his catalogue of 581 comet and nova records, HO Peng Yoke used charts which are basically Tsutsihashi'swith minor changes. In such cases, one wonders sometimes whether one is on the right track, 2, Star observations reached a peak in the Song Dynasty, and of the many observing programs, the one made during the reign Nuang-You (1049-1053)by the Astronomer Koyal ZNOU Zang was the moat detailed. The measured positions - the polar distance arrdthe number of degree within the lunar mansion - were originally given in the Astronomlcaf Chapter of "tiang-Chao GUQ Shin, the official history of the the Emperors Renzong and Yingzong of the Song Dynasty, but are no longer extant. After examining and inter-comparing the material given in %QK, LTHY (two variant editions), GKJY and TYLLr and after consulting the dynestic histary SS, the star chart in xYXFA and the Suzhou planisphere, we have arrived at the present set of data, which we oakI "The Huang-You Star List of the Song Dynasty". The authorship should be attributed te ZDGD ZoRg. In the third year of the reign Huang-You, on the 3rd day of the 12th (lunar) month (? 1052 January 71, ZHOU Zong, YU Yuan and SHU Yi-jian are recorded to have completed a new armillery * All old Chinese texts will be known by abbreviations.Fulltitles etc. are given at the and+

The Huang-You Star List
448
sphere, so the observations must have started shortly after and 1052 should be taken as the epoch of the observations. The content of the star list comprises six items, the name of the asterism, its relative position, the number of its member stars, specification of its determinative star, the "ru-xiu-du" (number of "degrees" inside the lunar mansion")and the polar distance of the determinative. Of the traditional 283 asterisms with 1464 stars, the present list has 282 asterisms with 1457 stars, lacking only the 6 stars of the asterism Ligong and the star Shaocheng on the Left Wall of the Purple Enclosure. Our examination, reduction and final tabulation have the following essential features: 1. Of our sources, we took the Ming edition of LTHY as the principal one. When the data in the five; sources seemed irreconciliable,we made separate calculations and consulted the relative position and the above star chart before we arrived at a final judgment. To save space, only the name of the asterism and the determinative stars are tabulated (both in Chinese characters and in Pinyin Romanization in this translation). 2. The identification of the 28 lunar mansion determinativeswere taken from a previous paper 13/. Their 1052 right ascensions and declinations were then found from their measured positions plus the known position of the Winter Solstice. The 1052 coordinates of the other stars were then deduced accordingly. 3. We then calculated the 1975 coordinates by iteration using the formulae ol,,o - olmz + M’+ N’sinc, 81mr.o - 81~+ N"cosor,,
.
tgq,
where M’ -

-
N'-$(-2004!'04225T+
l"395TZ- 0!'0371T3), 0!'426T*+0!'0416~'3),
4. We compared the above coordinates with those in the "Whole-Sky Star List" of Nanjing University and made identifications according to the following criteria: the difference in R.A. is not larger than 4mt that in Dec. not larger than lo, (in a few cases, these limits were widenend to 5m and 1025, or the mutual distance to 1:25), and the apparent magnitude is not fainter than 6.25. When there were more than one candidate, further examination preceded any final decision. This process resulted in 345 stars or 95.8% being given their modern idntifications. If we relax the tolerance to 2'- 3', then almost the whole list can be identified. 3. Comparing Schlegel's book, CRANG's "Hengxingbiao"and Tsutsihashi's table with our present list, we find, in each case, less than half of the stars have the same identifications. Between Yabuuchi and us, there are only 225 (or 62.5%) identifications in cormaon. The reason is that Schlegel's work was mainly based on a comparison between the star chart of 'NLL and the modern map which cannot provide a firm basis, while the lists of CHANG and Tsutsihashi were both based on the star catalogue in the YXKC system which was seriously adulterated with alterations in the Chinese positions by the Western missionaries so that it departed from the Chinese tradition considerably. As mentioned above, this is also one of the factors that vitiate some of Yabuuchi's work. By contrast, when we check Kogawa's 48 asterisms against our list, we find that,of the 45 having the same determinatives,no less than 43 are given the same identifications, The Huang-You Star List of the Song Dynasty results from observations made at the time. The positions agree with the descriptions in our historical texts, thus reflect and embody the Chinese star tradition. Chronologically, it is the successor to the "Star Canon of Master Shi" of the Warring States Period. It will serve as a reliable and scientific instrument in historical researches and analyses of old records of heavenly phenomena.l4/. ~F~~~CES 111 Yabuuchi,K., %ho GekuhTi,Kygto, 7 (1936) 42-89. /2/ Kogawa,S., TenmBn GeppZI,26 (1934yNos.6,7; 27 (1935) Nos.&12. /3/ PAN Nai and WANG De-chang?'
