The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) is pleased to make available The 1988 Report of the Joint National Committee on Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure (JNC IV). The report was recently released by the coordinating committee of the National High Blood Pressure Education Program, a program sponsored by the NHLBI. This represents the fourth in a series of these reports which have provided physicians and other health professionals with updated therapy recommendations for more than a decade. JNC IV reviews, updates, and expands the 1984 recommendations for controlling hypertension. The new report translates the results of the latest clinical trials to medical practice; addresses the needs of special populations; examines factors that influence the cost of care; and provides additional guidelines for managing high blood pressure in the presence of cardiovascular diseases and other coexisting medical conditions. It is intended as a guide for practicing physicians and other health professionals in their care of hypertensive patients and as a reference for those participating in the many community high blood pressure control programs throughout the country.
